Blank Children's Hospital and UnityPoint Health (Des Moines) are seeking an American or Canadian Board Certified or Board Eligible Pediatric Surgeon to join two other Pediatric Surgeons in a robust pediatric surgery practice. Blank Children's Hospital provides pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty care to the residents of central Iowa, a population of more than 1 million. UnityPoint Health is the nation's fifth largest non-denominational health system and delivers patient-centered coordinated care to eight major regions in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Blank Children's Hospital shares a campus with Iowa Methodist Medical Center but maintains a distinct identity with its storied history, community outreach, and modern facility boasting 100% private rooms. The hospital has a 44-bed Level IIIB NICU, a 12-bed PICU, a 43-bed medical/surgical ward, and a flex ward with 10 ICU-equipped beds. There is a dedicated pediatric emergency department with 12 regular beds, 6 fast-track beds, and a resuscitation room. The Pediatric Surgery Clinic houses staff offices, examination rooms, a large procedure room, and a private family waiting area.
Responsibilities & Practice Details:
Surgical support for a full-service tertiary care pediatric hospital and complementary clinics, with a full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties.
Large case volume representing the complete spectrum of pediatric surgical disease including neonatal index cases, solid tumors, and congenital and acquired diseases of the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen.
State-of-the-art surgical suites housed within Iowa Methodist Medical Center, with pediatric-appropriate open, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic instrumentation and an active robotic program.
A Pediatric Surgery Center that separates pediatric from adult patients and provides proactive Child Life Services to every patient for every procedure. Child Life Services are an integral part of inpatient care and are available as needed in the Emergency Department and specialty clinics.
Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Care Program managed by the Adult Trauma Service in conjunction with the Level 1 Adult Trauma Care Program at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. All call coverage provided by the adult trauma surgeons, with the pediatric surgeons available for consultation only as needed.
ACGME-approved General Surgery Residency program at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, with mid-level surgery residents rotating through the Pediatric Surgery Service year-round and providing first-call coverage. The hospital also hosts rotating medical students from the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. An academic appointment and research opportunities are available if desired.
