Peer tutor job description

This position is for Spring 2023.

Postings are open through 10/10. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis for qualified candidates from the week of November 14th. Applications submitted earlier will be given priority consideration.

Peer Tutors assist fellow undergraduates in UK courses through Transformative Learning's Peer Tutoring Program at The Study. There are no appointments and tutoring is offered in small, informal groups. Peer Tutors help tutees fully understand concepts, complete assignments, and study for exams. Peer Tutors are responsible for greeting tutees and making them feel welcome and included, providing guidance in course content, and helping tutees hone study skills and strategies.

Peer Tutors guide tutees to deeper understanding of course material and are never expected to give answers or replace course instructors.

Peer Tutors receive extensive training in preparation for being effective peer tutors, so no prior tutoring experience is needed.

Because the Peer Tutor position is a professional position, it includes responsibilities beyond working regular shifts, including professional development sessions, performance evaluations, regular team meetings, and promotional activities.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Applicants should enjoy helping others and sharing their experiences as students of biology. Applicants should have outstanding oral communication skills and be professional and timely. A thorough working knowledge of the Biology series is also required.

POSITION SUMMARY:

KLC Peer Tutors assist students with reading comprehension, math, writing, research skills, and/or concepts key to the field in which the student-employee tutors (English, math, science, theology, history, etc.).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assist students with reading comprehension, math, writing, research skills, and/or concepts key to the field in which the student-employee tutors (English, math, science, theology, history, drawing etc.)
• Participate in tutor training sessions offered by the Keleher Learning Commons
• Adhere to Keleher Learning Commons Code of Ethics
• Develop and conduct presentations and skillshops on academic success related topics
• Maintain accurate records of all tutoring sessions
• Comply with deadlines for items such as time cards
• Perform additional duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS :

• Recommendation of USM faculty member
• Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing (Freshmen may be considered on a case by case basis)
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
• An A or B in each of the courses tutored OR demonstrated knowledge of the subject
  1. Example: Student has not taken Precalculus because they started their first college semester in Calculus I, but they can tutor Precalculus as it is considered prerequisite knowledge for Calculus I
• Ability to abide by guidelines regarding student confidentiality
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to manage tutoring schedules and reporting procedures
• Possess a willingness to explain the same material in different ways with patience and an understanding that everyone learns differently

Greets students and assist in answering general questions.

Assists students with transcripts, schedule and course changes, and demographic changes.

Assists students in the appeals process, Graduation Petition process, registration process, adds and drops, and withdrawals.

Monitors student central appointments during peak registration times. Sets appointments for students with Deans, Chairs, faculty, Student Finance, etc.

Assists with student related campus events and organizations, job fairs, Senior Project and other special projects related specifically to students.

Assists students in the Library with research projects and locating web based and publication resources.

Provides academic assistance and tutoring to students.

Completes other duties as assigned.

High School diploma or equivalent

Current Student in good standing and possess a GPA of 2.5 or higher

Must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits per semester
