Penguin Random House CEO and leadership

Madeline McIntosh was appointed CEO of Penguin Random House U.S. in April 2018. Her previous positions in the company include President of the Penguin Publishing Group; President and COO of Penguin Random House U.S.; Publisher, Random House Audio; and Director of Adult Sales, Random House, Inc. Madeline originally joined the Random House predecessor Bantam Doubleday Dell in 1994, as an assistant in the New Media department. In addition to the variety of positions she has held within the company, she served in 2008 and 2009 as the Director of Kindle Content Acquisition for Amazon, based in Luxembourg.

Jim Johnston was appointed Chief Financial Officer in September 2018. In this dual global and U.S. role, Jim oversees the management and coordination of all fiscal planning, reporting, and analysis for Penguin Random House U.S. and provides financial leadership and support across all territories. During his tenure, Jim has managed several initiatives dedicated to the continuous improvement of the systems that safeguard our company assets.

Jim joined Random House in 1990 and subsequently became a valuable member of the Knopf Publishing Group, where he served as Director, Business Operations. In 2003, he became the Director of Worldwide Reporting and Planning. During the merger of Penguin and Random House, Jim guided the successful integration of the budgeting process and financial consolidation of the newly formed company.

Anke Steinecke was appointed General Counsel of Penguin Random House in the US in July 2016, and named Chief Legal Officer of Penguin Random House worldwide in January 2018. In addition to leading the legal team in the US, she advises and provides legal support across territories with an emphasis on a pragmatic, collaborative, and productive approach to legal matters.

Anke is a recognized expert in First Amendment and Intellectual Property law, and she and her team counsel on all aspects of the publishing process, prepublication and content review, litigation, material transactions, including corporate and commercial contracts and M&A, licensing and intellectual property matters, finance and data protection/privacy and general corporate matters.

As President and Chief Operating Officer of Penguin Random House U.S., Nihar Malaviya is responsible for the company’s full range of publishing operations, including supply chain, strategic project management, data science and market analysis, IT, and client services. In his leadership role, he is focused on driving growth, setting the global data and technology agenda, and building new capabilities for future success.

Nihar led the successful operations and systems integration of Penguin and Random House, the largest-ever merger in trade book publishing. He has also spearheaded the creation of a variety of industry-first capabilities-in data science, supply chain, technology, and consumer insights-which has resulted in significant core competitive advantages for Penguin Random House worldwide. Nihar joined Penguin Random House’s majority shareholder, Bertelsmann, in 2001 as part of its Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program. Two years later, he moved to Random House, ascending to the role of SVP, Strategy, Analytics, and Program Development in 2012, after taking on a variety of corporate roles and projects leading digital strategy, eBook pricing, implementation of vendor-managed inventory, sales reorganization, technology infrastructure consolidation, supply-chain redesign, and production vendor renegotiations. Nihar is a two-time winner of the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurial Award for Strategy Implementation, the first for navigating Random House through its digital transformation, and the second for executing the operational aspects of the Penguin Random House merger in the United States.
