Surgical Technician Position Summary The Surgical Technician is a person who has completed the academic and clinical requirements to function as a member of the surgical team and reports to a registered nurse (R.N). Job Details PRIMARY FUNCTION: To assist the surgical team, under the direction of aprofessional nurse, implementing skilled nursing care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients undergoing surgical procedures. In the First Assist function, to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The CSFA performs these functions during the operation under the direction and the supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy. In addition to intraoperative duties, the CSFA also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. PRINCIPAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES: Performs assigned procedures for comfort and well-being for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, demonstrating a concern for safety. Assists in updating physician reference sheets. Participates in the nursing care plans, functioning as an effective team member. Demonstrates ability to scrub on all procedures, minor to major. Communicates effectively to patients, families, employees, and physicians, utilizing both written and verbal communication skills. Responds appropriately to crisis situations as outlined in unit specific standards, initiates interventions within scope of responsibility; notifies RN. Maintains required credentials of BCLS and mandatory inservice patients. Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and provide the care needed. Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors. Performs other related duties as required. Acts upon surgeon request and under direct supervision of surgeon CSFA may perform the following: Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding; Packing with sponges; Digital manipulation of tissue; Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging & Manipulation of suture materials (e.g., loops, tags, running sutures) Assists with hemostasis by: Clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue; Tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue; Applying hemostatic clips; Placing hemostatic agents; Applying tourniquets; Applying vessel loops; Applying noncrushing clamps & Applying direct digital pressure. Assists with closure of body planes: Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or nonabsorbable material; Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips; Closing the skin with method indicated by surgeon (suture, staples, etc.) & Postoperative cutaneous injection oflocal anesthetic agent. Selects and apply appropriate wound dressings including liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping, or immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid). Provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue. SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS: Daily contact with patients, employees, physicians, and students. Contact at various time intervals with families, visitors, community agencies, companies as well as general public. DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: Gives direction to PPCT's, SAIV's, support service personnel, and at various tirne intervals assists in direction of new staff RN's and ST's. DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Directly reports to Nurse Manager; receives supervision also from PCC's and direction from staff RN's. Practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon. SHIFT/HOURS: Part-Time Requires Primarily Day Shift: Any day between M-F (20hrs per week) On-Call responsibility on Weekends 2 - 10hour shifts EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program; or minimum 2 year ORT experience preferred. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Patient Care Technicians (PCT) are Certified Nursing Assistants with additional technical skills as required by the department/setting. Essential Functions: * In a team relationship with a registered nurse, and under the instruction, direction, and supervision of a nurse, the PCT shall: o Collect and record routine health data that is defined but not limited to cultural, religious and socioeconomic background and activities of daily living. o Orally report the health status data as required by the nurse. o Provide feedback to the nurse regarding the nurse-directed plan of care, which is being implemented. o Provide feedback to the nurse about the patient's expressed wishes concerning the plan of care. o Perform electrocardiograms. o Perform colostomy care. o Assists with other delegated care activities as verified and competencies per unit. * Provide assistance with activities of daily living as delegated by the nurse, including but not limited to: o Morning, evening, and general care to include bathing, mouth care, hair care, shaving, and skin care according to individual patient needs. o Repositioning patients to prevent skin breakdown. o Ensuring patients are out of bed and ambulated according to physician orders and RN direction. o Preparing for and assisting patients with meals, nourishments and beverages. * Perform interventions as delegated by a registered nurse, including but not limited to: o Hourly rounding to include the 4 P's: Pain, Potty, Personal Needs; Possessions. o Insertion of indwelling urinary catheters and intermittent catheterization. o Insertion of peripheral intravenous indwelling catheters. o Blood glucose testing, vital signs, pulse oximetry, height, weight, SCD's, indwelling urinary catheter removal, indwelling peripheral intravenous catheter removal, simple wound care to uncomplicated healing surgical wounds, and/or other equipment required by each department. * Record routine data and care provided on appropriate documents. * Processes physician orders utilizing computerized physician entry. Completes all forms and requisitions per policy. * Utilizes computer to enter patient admission data, change orders, requisition supplies and generate/received interdepartmental communication. * Identify the need for assistance and request assistance when the PCT is unsure about the condition; does not know how to do an activity; or is working in a new practice setting. * Report the patient's response and the patient's progress to the nurse at designated times and/or when there is a change in the patient's condition. * Participation in: o Quality of care activities o Performance self-appraisal o Continued learning o Collaboration o Completion of appropriate delegated assignments. * Adhere to local, state and federal guidelines and regulations regarding client confidentiality and privacy rights. Direct all patient requests for information to the nurse. * Advocate for the patient by reporting to the nurse statements expressed by the patient or family regarding request for information; concerns about care; patient needs; and collaboration with other health care team members by reporting information and data regarding the patient in a timely, truthful and complete manner. * Reinforce the nurse's health teaching in accordance with the facility, employer, and at the direction of the registered nurse's written instruction. Report the patient's response to teaching or requests for additional information. * Completes mandatory education requirement for the hospital and department. * Assists in orienting new employees to the department. * Stays informed of unit/hospital events by reading minutes or attending staff meetings. * Serves on committees and projects as necessary. * Comply with all local, state and federal guidelines and regulations governing Certified Nursing Assistant practice. * Comply with the C.N.A. code of ethics in accordance with COMAR 10.39.07; * Performs safely and competently all activities as assigned or delegated. * Keeps the department clean and orderly: kitchen, soiled utility room, clean utility room, etc. * Floats to other units as assigned. * Transports patients as needed. * Performs the duties of a patient care companion as assigned.
