May 10, 1876 The Centennial International Exhibition -- held in Philadelphia to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in that city -- was opened.
The Department of Highways, the forerunner to PennDOT, was created by an Act that was passed on May 31, 1903.
The highway system of Pennsylvania was officially created on May 31, 1911 under the direction of the Sproul Act, with 8,835 miles of highway falling under the control of the Department of Highways.
Greatest growth in the state highway system occurred in 1931 when 20,156 miles (32,438 km) of rural roads were taken over by the Commonwealth.
As part of Act 120, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was created on July 1, 1970.
