JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS Dr. Kristina Petersen's lab in the Department of Nutritional Sciences is seeking dynamic part-time research assistants to join our highly productive research kitchen. The Kitchen produces tightly controlled meals and diets for research studies conducted at Penn State. The position involves preparing, cooking, and packing research meals and snacks according to standard protocols and recipes. In addition, the position involves engaging with research participants to provide instructions and assess adherence to the research protocol, research-related administrative tasks, and data entry. The position also involves supervision of undergraduate student research assistants. We seek candidates that are proactive, task- orientated, attentive to detail, and have excellent communication and organizational skills. Prior experiences in customer service or hospitality a plus, but a positive attitude, love of food and a willingness to learn and work as an individual or as part of a team depending on the task is the main requirement. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 400 species of frogs. Like many tropical regions, Madagascar's mid-high elevation rainforest is climatically favorable to Bd (Lötters et al. 2008). Bd has spread rapidly around the world, so it is likely only a matter of time before a lethal strain of the pathogen reaches Madagascar. The over-arching goal of this research is to proactively develop disease mitigation strategies, such as skin probiotics, for amphibian conservation. To accomplish this, we have established a colony of Madagascar frogs, representing 14 species. Currently, we are working to develop effective ways to captively-breed selected species, maintain tadpoles and produce viable froglets. By producing additional individuals, we can conduct experimental work to identify effective probiotic therapies for Madagascar frogs. In addition, we are interested in observing and recording breeding behaviors for these under-studied species. The Bletz Lab is seeking undergraduate student(s) to assist with multiple aspects of this work, particularly the captive breeding of the frogs in our amphibian colony. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS The Forage Crop Systems Laboratory seeks an hourly-waged part-time research assistant within the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University. Typical duties for a research assistant will include compiling research data, screening data quality, conducting preliminary analysis, conducting a literature review, and writing manuscripts. The research assistant will focus on the Stubble Height project conclusion with one journal article published under the leadership of Guojie Wang, the Principal Investigator, in the Forage Crop Systems Laboratory. Upon completion of the Stubble Height project, the research assistant will focus on historical data from all forage variety trials at Penn State, work on data requisition and visualization, and publish several extension fact sheets as outcomes. While working on the publications, the research assistant will also assist Guojie Wang with the NESARE funding application by organizing brainstorming meetings, project planning, and proposal construction. The publication and funding application will take approximately 15 hours per week. The research assistant will support the implementation of agronomic and ecological field experiments on perennial forage crops and annual cover crops. The research assistant is expected to ensure the safe operation of specialized equipment, collect data by measurement, sampling, and subjective assessments to evaluate forage crops, and prepare plant tissue and soil samples for lab analysis. The fieldwork will take approximately 5 hours per week. Applicants with a master's degree in agronomy, animal science, plant science, soil science, biology, agriculture, bioengineering, biotechnology, microbiology, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Experience with farm equipment and fieldwork is desired. The successful candidate will work up to 20 hours/week, starting on November 1, 2025, or at a later date. The work location is at Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center in Rock Springs, central PA, and University Park, PA; relocation and housing are not provided. The successful candidates will assist in research on projects associated with conservation and restoration genetics of forest trees. Typical work duties of the selected candidate include: Assist the principal investigator, graduate and undergraduate students in designing, planning and conducting field, protected culture, and laboratory experiments on vegetable crops contributing to determine feasibility and assuring quality and efficiency of assigned projects. Organize laboratory activities and maintain laboratory, greenhouse, protected culture systems and experimental field in good working conditions, participating in developing research methods and protocols, identifying problems and potential solutions. Coordinate data collection, screening, and management; implement research protocols and interpret results; install, manage and operate sensors, dataloggers and relative software for microenvironmental monitoring, processing lab samples, operate laboratory equipment for plant tissue, water solution, and soil extract samples analysis. Supervise and train graduate students and wage payroll employees conducting experimental activities by explaining and demonstrating protocols or technical equipment and communicating work progress to lab members. Assist in sourcing needed material and supply, ordering supplies and equipment for research and demonstration activities, tracking expenses to keep project budgets in order, documenting costs, and assisting with writing project proposals and reports. The candidate will be involved in a wide range of research and extension activities aimed at enhancing and developing sustainable vegetable production systems and improving vegetable quality. Some daily or overnight travel may be necessary to conduct research and demonstration activities or to coordinate work with personnel at collaborating institutions. This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding. Education and experience: Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred, and three or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with degree in horticulture, plant science, agronomy and related field or to candidates with enough work experience in vegetable crop science research. We are seeking a well-organized, self-motivated and willing to work independently individual. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. The candidate should have experience using computer software and especially Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Power Point. Effective English writing and verbal communication skills are also required. The ideal candidate should possibly have experience with high tunnel management, irrigation and fertigation system design, setup and maintenance and have familiarity or willing to learn how to operate a tractor and other equipment and should be willing to obtain the PA pesticide applicator certification.
