POSITION SPECIFICS
We are searching for Battery Systems Research and DevelopmentEngineers to join our Battery Technology Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will design, develop, and tests prototype battery systems for high power and high energy electric propulsion underwater vehicles. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).
ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.
You will:
Design and prototype by creating new module and pack designs or improving existing ones for enhanced performance or safety
Evaluate new battery chemistries by scouting and assessing innovative and emerging technologies through literature reviews, external partnerships, and competitive benchmarking
Design comprehensive experiments and testing protocols (performance, cycle life, thermal stability, electrical stress, vibration) in a lab environment
Collect, analyze, and interpret large sets of data to evaluate performance, identify failure modes, and determine root causes of issues
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and fabrication teams to ensure seamless integration of battery components into underwater electric vehicles
Prepare detailed technical reports, schematics, design documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and validation plans
Additional responsibilities for higher level positions include:
Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems
Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs
Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes
Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or oral/written presentations
Required skills/experience areas include:
High-voltage battery systems
Work within a technical team of engineers/scientists
High-voltage battery design concepts, and possess a proven ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware into larger, more complex systems
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Successful technical publications in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings

The primary research focus is RF Propagation from ELF to millimeter wave.

Use accepted methods and techniques, design, develop, and implement of RF propagation models including environmental effects such as space weather and meteorology. Also, you will use RF propagation models to analyze the effectiveness of engineering products, systems, and subsystems
Develop novel techniques in RF propagation including new mathematical derivations of both electromagnetic phenomena and relevant environmental factors such as radio space weather and meteorology

Learn broad strategic objectives and applications of RF propagation modeling analysis, develop relationships with major sponsors of external research, and develop grant funding

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending on your education and work experience. Minimumally require a Bachelors' degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline. Additional education and/or experience required for higher level positions. A Masters' degree or PHD in Mathematics or Electrical Engineering is preferred.
Required skills include:
Experience in RF Propagation mathematical methods, implementation of new and established methods, and application of methods to solve specific problems
Demonstrated ability to document research findings in whitepapers and technical reports
Proven experience implementing scientific or technical solutions independently with guidance from mentors

This position will directly support research and development (R&D) efforts in the areas of electronic materials processing, characterization/testing, semiconductor device fabrication, sample preparation, polishing, and/or materials growth/synthesis. EMDD is a vertically integrated lab with key areas of focus including wide/ultrawide bandgap (WBG/UWBG) semiconductors, sensors, ceramics, laser processing, and additive manufacturing (AM).

Preparing samples (e.g., cutting, lapping, polishing, etc.)

The Eberly College of Science, Department of Physics at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking to fill one Part Time ResearchEngineer position in the Penn State LIGO group. In this position you will report to Dr. Chad Hanna and your responsibilities will include software and systems engineering to work on the Scalable Infrastructure for Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (SCIMMA) project. The goal for the project is to provide the infrastructure and data services needed for groups to effectively receive notice of astrophysical detections; analyze and exchange data; and request follow-up observations for astrophysical phenomena.
The software and systems engineer works in the context of the project's agile development effort to both expand the infrastructure and to ensure continuity of operations of the infrastructure. The engineer is a member of a small team seeking to satisfy the needs of a broad community. The project is agile and requires the ability to work generally in all the technical areas of the project, using intuition about the astrophysical community's needs.

We are searching for a Fluids Machinery Engineer to join our Fluids Machinery Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The Department is part of the Fluid Dynamics Division within the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, which has a long, successful history of providing innovative solutions and technology for a range of U.S. Government and Industry sponsors.
In this position, you will support the design and analysis of marine vehicle hydrodynamics, control effector design, flight controls and maneuvering, as well as supporting experimental fluids testing in a laboratory or field environment. Marine vehicle hydrodynamics focus on a detailed understanding of fluid generated forces (lift and drag) from various parts of a vehicle and how they interact. Flight controls and maneuvering focus on how pilots and autopilot algorithms use understanding of these fluid generated forces to control the kinematics (i.e. motion) of a vehicle in time and space. Experimental fluids testing involves observation and measurement of forces, moments, and flow interacting with a test article in a laboratory environment (wind tunnel or water tunnel) or with a prototype operating in the field.
You will:
Contribute to the design, assembly, and operation of complex test articles and experiments at ARL water tunnel facilities, government test facilities, and field sites
Perform design and analysis of vehicle control concepts, flight dynamics, and external hydrodynamics or aerodynamics at the component, subsystem and/or full vehicle system level
Provide subject matter expertise in the areas of fluid dynamics as part of multidisciplinary teams on well-defined questions and problems
Perform hands-on work in the preparation and execution of fluid dynamic experiments
Act as part of a team to acquire, analyze, and present technical results
Interact collaboratively with other engineers, researchers, and academic faculty
Additional responsibilities for a higher level position includes:
Lead the design, assembly, and operation of complex test articles and experiments at ARL water tunnel facilities, government test facilities, and field sites
Perform design and analysis of vehicle control concepts, flight dynamics, and external hydrodynamics or aerodynamics at the subsystem or system level
