DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

HOURS / DAYS: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm with overtime as required. Work schedules (hours and days) and location are subject to change based on department needs.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RATE: $24.99 - $29.59 Hourly (This position may be hired at the Engineer Technician II level, depending on qualifications.)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, typewriter, calculator, telephone, camera, and microfiche reader, cash register, and copy and fax machine, power and hand tools, and other maintenance equipment. Traffic Operations: Work is performed 25% inside/75% outside. Position Description

Position Description
At the Anoka County Transportation Division, our vision is to enhance and protect life by delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions. We are currently seeking an Engineering Technician III to support highway construction and improvement projects. This role provides daily oversight of field crews and contractors, ensuring smooth operations and compliance with project specifications. Key responsibilities include conducting construction inspections, designing and drafting highway construction plans, performing topographical and construction surveys, and testing materials used in highway and bridge construction. The technician will also oversee various phases of roadway development to ensure quality and safety standards are met.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

* Conduct testing and inspections of grading, paving, curb, concrete, and materials to support highway construction and improvement projects and ensure contract compliance.
* Maintain record keeping and documentation system for construction projects including pay quantities and materials, for state and federal guidelines.
* Oversee the daily activities of field crews and contractors on site to ensure each phase meets the standards and specification requirements.
* Conduct topographical construction surveying, including setting control, collecting data, and construction staking. Collect field information using complex survey instruments.
* Record necessary documentation such as highway alignments, vertical profiles, design of storm sewer systems and calculations of material quantities.
* Utilize design information for survey notes to construct the project and perform accurate staking.
* Compute quantities and check computations performed by others.
* Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
* Requires accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades program and at least 4 years of job-related experience.

We offer opportunities for trainees to develop management and technical skills through on-the-job training involving several challenging assignments and projects.
This multi-year program requires successful trainees who earn a satisfactory performance evaluation and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to graduate from Engineer Trainee to Assistant Engineer 1 in 18 Months.
Successful Trainees who progress to an Assistant Engineer 1 position will remain in this title at the agency's discretion until they receive their Professional Engineering license from the New York State Department of Education.
The Engineer Trainee Program may change based on the New York State Department of Education requirements.
Responsibilities
The Engineering Trainee shall work under the direction of a Manager or Engineer.
Perform elementary engineering work in scope development, design, request for contract development proposals, or capital construction oversight and/or inspection. Trainees may perform related support functions for capital projects, such as project controls, environmental engineering, or various engineering/technical functions.
Trainees will also receive training in engineering, construction, project management, and/or capital project support work of moderate difficulty and responsibility.
