Penreco company history timeline

1878

With a history dating back to 1878, Penreco produces the highest quality petrolatum, white oils and hydrocarbon gels for cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical applications.

1889

One of them, the South Penn Oil Company, was founded on May 27, 1889, as an oil-producing unit of the Standard Oil Trust, which at that time owned refineries and distribution networks but no producing oil wells.

1891

Houston developed as a rail centre, with 12 railways by 1891.

1901

Oil, discovered in the area in 1901, brought considerable industrial development, triggering the city’s expansion and prosperity from its 19th-century economic base of cotton and lumber.

1917

Racial tensions resulted in serious rioting in 1917, when black United States Army soldiers were stationed in the city; nearly 20 people were killed.

1925

Through a complex of mergers, the refiners and the growing number of Pennzoil distributors were incorporated in 1925 under the name the Pennzoil Company.

1936

3 Penreco s Rich History Penreco began in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania when John and George Beck founded the Pennsylvania Refining Company in In 1936, the development of solvents for heat-set printing led to a relationship with Magie Brothers Oil Company.

1937

These three men first met in 1937 at a refinery in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

1942

The Dickinson plant had been in operation since 1942 and was in the business to convert tube base oils into food grade mineral oils, produce soy methyl ester, package and blend solvents and petroleum sulfonates.

1955

More acquisitions followed over the years, and in 1955 South Penn Oil acquired complete ownership of Pennzoil.

1963

In 1963 two Texas-based exploration and production corporations—Zapata Petroleum and Stetco Petroleum—merged with South Penn Oil to form a new Pennzoil Company.

1965

By 1965 Pennzoil had become a fully integrated company, producing and marketing oil and gas products internationally.

1979

1984

On January 4, 1984, the J. Paul Getty interests agreed to merge Getty Oil Company with Pennzoil, but two days later this agreement was breached by the announcement of another agreement, selling Getty Oil to Texaco Inc.

1985

5 Penreco s Rich History In 1985, Penreco purchased Marathon Morco, a white oil and sulfonate producer in Dickinson, Texas.

Pennzoil’s subsequent lawsuit, which was pursued through state and federal courts, ultimately resulted in a jury decision in 1985 ruling that Texaco had knowingly interfered with Pennzoil’s binding agreement with the Getty interests.

1988

Pennzoil was awarded more than $10 billion in actual and punitive damages; Texaco ultimately paid $3 billion in cash in a final settlement in 1988.

1989

The east Dickinson Bayou property (8 acres) was purchased in 1989 and is presently undeveloped.

1996

1997

In October 1997, Penreco became a partnership between Pennzoil Quaker State and Conoco Inc.

1998

In 1998 Pennzoil’s motor-oil, refined products, and services divisions were spun off as a separate company, which promptly purchased a rival company, Quaker State Corporation, to form the Pennzoil–Quaker State Company.

1999

Meanwhile, Pennzoil’s remaining exploration and production divisions were renamed the PennzEnergy Company, and this was bought in 1999 by Devon Energy Corporation, based in Oklahoma City.

2001

In February 2001, M.E. Zukerman Specialty Oil Corporation purchased a 50 percent stake in Penreco from Pennzoil-Quaker State Company.

In 2001 Tropical Storm Allison killed 22 people in the area, damaged office buildings and thousands of homes, and caused widespread flooding in the city.

2003
