Position Summary
The Hitting / Catching Coach is responsible for the development of both hitters and catchers across the organization, from the Major League level to the Dominican Academy. This role focuses on implementing modern coaching strategies to improve offensive performance, defensive catching skills, leadership, and mental approach, while ensuring consistent organizational messaging and alignment with player development philosophies.
This position works collaboratively with Baseball Operations leadership, analytics, performance science, medical, and strength & conditioning staff to optimize player performance and long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
February through October
Leadership & Collaboration
• Collaborate with the Director of Hitting, Director of Catching, and Director of Player Development to align departmental vision, philosophies, and player development objectives.
• Integrate input from analytics, R&D, video, performance science, strength & conditioning, and medical staff to support holistic player development.
Coaching & Development Plans
• Design and implement individualized and group development plans for hitters and catchers at all levels.
• Ensure cohesive coaching strategies and consistent messaging across the organization.
Hitting Development
• Develop hitters' swing mechanics, swing decisions, quality of contact, and mental approach at the plate.
• Utilize modern hitting technologies and tools, including swing analysis, biomechanics, eye-tracking technologies, and performance metrics.
Catching Development
• Develop catchers' defensive skills including receiving, blocking, throwing, pitch-framing, and game management.
• Leverage advanced tools and data such as biomechanics, pitch-framing metrics, and catcher performance analytics.
Player Monitoring & Communication
• Track in-season progress for hitters and catchers, updating objectives and making necessary adjustments.
• Maintain clear communication with leadership through documentation and updates via each player's Slack channel.
Organizational Alignment
• Ensure all staff members and players receive unified instruction aligned with organizational philosophies and best practices.
November through January
Off-Season Development
• Design and oversee individualized off-season training plans for hitters and catchers, ensuring continued development and readiness for the upcoming season.
Progress Monitoring
• Track off-season progress, provide feedback, and adjust programs as needed.
• Maintain consistent communication with players and coaches to ensure off-season plans are executed effectively and documented via the player's Slack channel.
Off-Season Camps & Education
• Participate in off-season instructional camps as assigned.
• Engage in continued education opportunities to remain at the forefront of hitting and catching innovation.
Evaluation & Collaboration
• Assist in player evaluation efforts, including collaboration with the scouting department on potential future acquisitions, as needed.
