On this day, March 4, 1974, People magazine first went on sale.

In the decades since the American actress Mia Farrow appeared on the cover of its first issue in March 1974, People covers have showcased hundreds of film stars, musicians, performers, and political figures.

When Time, Inc. launched People Magazine in 1974, the leading afternoon talk television show, Donahue, brought considered debate about important issues into the nation's living rooms and the leading national daily newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, brought serious news to the nation's doorsteps.

1988

Despite mixed blessings, the first issue was distributed in February 1988 under the name Business Digest.
