1893 Electricity is introduced at the Columbia Exposition.
In December 1900, North Shore Gas Company acquired all of the assets of Waukegan Gas, Light and Fuel Company.
1912 North Shore Consolidated Gas Company changed its name to North Shore Gas Company.
John Tucker was the first Black officer of the American Gas Association (AGA). Founded in 1918, the AGA represents more than 200 energy companies that deliver natural gas throughout the United States, serving more than 71 million customers.
1927 William A. Baehr Organization took control of North Shore Gas Company and also organized North Shore Coke and Chemical Company.
1932 Peoples Gas constructs the first long-distance, high-pressure, steel natural gas pipeline from north Texas to Chicago, allowing for the first-time industrial use of natural gas.
1941 North Shore Coke and Chemical Company was dissolved and most of its assets were transferred to North Shore Gas Company.
Midwest Natural Gas Corporation was incorporated in 1959.
In May 1962, after a few years of learning the difficulties of pipeline construction, the initial owners decided to sell to three individuals interested in seeing the company and service territory develop.
1962 For the first time, Peoples Gas is able to meet all demands by Chicago residents for natural gas to heat their homes, helping to clean up Chicago by diminishing its reliance on coal and oil to heat homes.
A pioneer in electrogas dynamics, Gourdine founded his own research and development firm, Gourdine Systems, in 1964.
1967 Peoples Gas Company was incorporated as a holding company to hold the stock of The Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company and North Shore Gas and other subsidiaries.

In 1981, Midwest purchased Peoples Gas & Power Company, Inc., which also served rural areas and towns in Greene County, Indiana, such as Bloomfield, Lyons and Switz City.
Midwest held an ownership position in Indiana Natural for several years and in 2015, acquired 100% ownership in the company.
In 2017, Peoples announced an agreement to purchase Delta Natural Gas, headquartered in Winchester, Kentucky.
On March 16, 2020, Peoples was officially acquired by Essential Utilities, Inc.
