Permian High School history

In just five years later, the Panthers won their first state championship in 1965.

In 1966, the school district allowed the annexation of the Permian Field House, and the following year, the swimming pool was added.

Permian’s first undefeated regular season was in 1970, when they lost in the state finals to Austin Reagan for the second time in three years.

Daryl Hunt “Moose” was a member of the 1972 State Champion team.

The year 1976… ‘MOJO’ had become so widespread that the Permian Seniors were to let it be known MOJO and Odessa Permian High School were one in the same.

Terry Brown played for Permian in 1979, when Gaines was an assistant coach.

Williams was a starter and played on the undefeated 1980 State Championship team.

Dalton Gladden Linesman for the 1981-82 teams, Dalton left Odessa and got into communications in Dallas after graduating.

Jay Ragland Played offensive tackle and defensive end for the Panthers in 1983-84.

Allman was a junior when the team reached the state finals in 1985.

Alan Wyles A member of the 1989 ESPN National Champion team.

Permian hasn't won a state championship since 1991 and had five other head coaches since Gaines left to become an assistant coach at Texas Tech.

Britt Hager Played linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1992-96.

Malcolm Hamilton Played linebacker for the Washington Redskins from 1997-99.

David Durell Started at quarterback for the Panthers in 2000-01.

When the film premiered in Hollywood in October 2004, Gaines was into what would be his final season as head coach at Abilene Christian University.

He became an assistant coach at Texas Tech and moved through four different coaching positions in college and high school before returning to Odessa in 2005 as the athletic director for the Ector County school district that oversees Permian and Odessa High.
