Job Description Peterson Trucks has a need for an experienced Truck Technician at our San Martin, CA location. SUMMARY This position performs service repair and maintenance activities primarily in the service shop and field for customer and/or sales and rental fleet equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Job functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned. What You'll Do: • Perform general maintenance and repairs on engines, heavy equipment, automobiles, cranes, and mounted units such as welders and compressors. • Diagnose, disassemble, repair, weld, assemble, and test mechanical components including power steering, air conditioning, anti-slip differentials, and more. • Service electrical systems (e.g., voltage regulators, electric brakes), hydraulic systems (e.g., tailgates, clutches), cooling systems, fuel systems (including CNG, propane, fuel injection), exhaust systems, air compressors, and hoisting mechanisms. • Repair and maintain automatic transmissions (e.g., Allison), diesel engines, ignition systems, transaxles, hydraulic PTOs, and performing front-end alignments. • Conduct state safety and emissions inspections for Maryland and Virginia. • Mount and repair compressors, welders, special bodies, and body components. • Perform field repairs and tow vehicles to the shop as needed. • Install and remove tire chains, maintain batteries and chargers, and perform rough bodywork. • Fabricate and repair seat frames, bodies, and chassis using welding and torch cutting. • Issue parts when the supervisor is unavailable and work independently when required. • Maintain shop equipment, tools, office furniture, and facility equipment. • Instruct other employees on the proper use of automotive equipment, power take-offs, winches, etc. • Balance wheels and tires and repair or change tire and wheel assemblies. Tools used include a wide variety of hand and power tools, jacks, presses, lifting devices, electrical and pneumatic equipment, computerized testing devices, front-end alignment machines, and tire changing equipment. The technician will also use a computerized transportation system to enter and retrieve data and create work orders. This role may also support related business and administrative activities such as backend meter processing, corrosion processing, leak/damage prevention, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, and cross-functional training. Shift work, on-call responsibilities, and use of a personal vehicle may be required. What You Have/What You Need: • High School Diploma or GED required. • A combination of five (5) years of recent work experience as an ASE-certified auto or truck mechanic OR graduation from an accredited career/technical institute in the automotive field with at least two (2) years of recent ASE-certified experience, including servicing DOT vehicles. About the Role: The Lead Mechanic will support a team of mechanics, coordinate repair schedules, manage parts inventory, and communicate with operations staff to minimize downtime. The position will also perform routine maintenance and servicing of equipment and trucks, including but not limited to diagnostics, inspections, parts replacement and system overhauls. Shift: Ranges from Monday-Friday, 7am-7pm, including weekends, with some variations per business needs. Responsibilities: Planning and scheduling services needed for site, including other sites Directing and monitoring other mechanics activities and ensuring the completion of scheduled maintenance Order parts and interact with vendors to ensure all equipment is serviced/repaired in a timely and safe manner Provides reports to Site Manager documenting mechanic activities and work log, and ensure all the site's mechanical needs are met Inspecting trucks, cranes, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment for proper performance. Diagnostics using computerized testing equipment Enter data in maintenance management system Cleaning, lubricating, and conducting routine services Cleaning and servicing of machine attachments, such as winches, blades and side booms. Perform major repairs when necessary Report damaged or faulty equipment, including safety concerns/hazards or defects to leadership on site when identified Perform emergency repairs in the field Perform other job-related duties as assigned Minimum Job Qualifications: High school diploma or GED preferred State issued, valid Driver's License Preferred Job Qualifications: Five (5) or more years' experience with heavy equipment maintenance required, preferably in the compost industry Advanced knowledge of diesel and gas engines, welding, brakes and hydraulics Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local job site health and safety rules, regulations, and best practices Ability to perform complex repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities using both manual and computerized tools Proficiency with tools, machinery, and repair equipment Ability to delegate tasks and oversee job completion with efficiency and accuracy Strong decision-making under pressure, especially in time-sensitive repair situations Ability to prioritize work orders and manage shop workflow Recordkeeping skills for maintenance logs, inventory, and service histories Ability to use company maintenance software Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external customers Time management and multitasking in a fast-paced environment Ability to be a team-player for overall company success. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Normal work environment is indoors and outdoors, with exposure to all weather conditions, dirt, high levels of noise, smells/odors and at times exposure to dangerous and/or toxic substances requiring necessary precautions, including PPE. Position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to, hearing protection, safety-toed boots, utility gloves, hard hat, reflective vest, and safety glasses.
