Pharmacist assistants provide support to pharmacists by performing various clerical tasks that are necessary for the smooth operations of the pharmacy. Their main duties are to process sales transactions on the POS, take inventory of medications and supplies, answer incoming phone calls, type out and print prescription labels, and manage fax messages and emails.

Pharmacist assistants are not allowed to answer medical or medication-related questions. Hence, one of their duties is to also refer these questions to the pharmacist on duty. They may also be responsible for communicating with insurance companies or clearinghouses when there are problems with a customer's prescription.

The minimum educational requirement of this position is a high school diploma or GED. Pharmacies usually provide training on the job, but prior experience in pharmacy assistance or another clerical position can be a great advantage. Apart from these requirements, a pharmacist assistant must also be detail-oriented, organized, accurate, and well-versed in HIPPA regulations.

By working as a pharmacist assistant, one can earn an average of $35,000 a year. Pharmacist assistants may also obtain certifications to become licensed pharmacy technicians or another higher position.

There are certain skills that many pharmacist assistants have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed customer-service skills, detail oriented and listening skills.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a pharmacist assistant, we found that a lot of resumes listed 20.0% of pharmacist assistants included customer service, while 12.4% of resumes included patient care, and 7.4% of resumes included phone calls. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

When it comes to searching for a job, many search for a key term or phrase. Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the pharmacist assistant job title. But what industry to start with? Most pharmacist assistants actually find jobs in the health care and retail industries.

How To Become a Pharmacist Assistant

If you're interested in becoming a pharmacist assistant, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 34.0% of pharmacist assistants have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 2.7% of pharmacist assistants have master's degrees. Even though some pharmacist assistants have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a pharmacist assistant. When we researched the most common majors for a pharmacist assistant, we found that they most commonly earn bachelor's degree degrees or associate degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on pharmacist assistant resumes include high school diploma degrees or diploma degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a pharmacist assistant. In fact, many pharmacist assistant jobs require experience in a role such as cashier. Meanwhile, many pharmacist assistants also have previous career experience in roles such as pharmacist technician or sales associate.
