Provision of professional pharmacist services to the inmate population as well as all technical support functions within the pharmacy. Will help maintain supplies in the pharmacy from the main stock in the store room. Assist in the reordering of supplies and the ordering of medications. Issue supplies to other areas within Health Services. Help in the running of pill lines. keep the pharmacy and storeroom clean. Notify administration personnel if there are any problems with structural or utility malfunctions. Count and maintain correct counts of narcotics, needles and syringes. Assist in maintaining all logs and check sheets within the pharmacy. Provide professional consultation services to inmates regarding newly prescribed medications during distribution activities. Provide written and/or oral education materials to the patients as stated in the Health Services Manual. Pharmacists must become proficient in all BOP and Institutional policies and procedures relating to the provision of pharmacy services. All medical records remain the property of the Bureau of Prisons. Pharmacist services will include the following: Interpreting medical/dental staff prescription orders. These orders may be the traditional physical prescription or orders taken from entries of the patients medical file. Entering prescriptions into the pharmacy's prescription computer system and printing prescription labels. Selecting the correct medication and filling the prescriptions. Inventorying medications and supplies, recording items that are low in stocking levels, and advising the Health Service Administrator and/or Assistant Health Service Administrator of medications that need ordering. Interacting with inmates regarding their medications and providing patient education about the medication. Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations during the performance of the above duties. Professional technical observation of the pharmacy technician's pill line duties and dispensing duties will be scrutinized and reviewed by the Health Services Administrator and Assistant HSA. Stock and distribute pharmaceutical and medical supplies. The Pharmacist is a supervisory classification overseeing the work of the pharmacy technicians. The employee is responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of pharmaceutical drugs and prescriptions. It is the primary purpose of CHCCC to provide the highest quality of total care possible to the patient population it serves. Such a level of quality depends ultimately on the staff's desire and ability to work together, individually, and as a team. The employee is expected to be professional, punctual, maintain regular attendance, be cooperative, organized, and enthusiastic at all times. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Additional duties may be assigned with or without prior notice. Reviews prescriptions issued by the Physician, or other authorized prescriber to assure accuracy and safety. Enters data such as patient name, prescribed medication and cost, to maintain pharmacy files, charge system, and inventory. Prepares and dispenses medicines and preparations for patient use. Maintains custody of controlled substances. Orders and receives drugs, medicines, biologicals, and chemicals. Accounts for stock of medications, controlled substances, and materials on hand to maintain an appropriate inventory level. Dispenses prescriptions and charts orders consistent with the pharmacy laws of the State of California and Federal laws. Assists the medical staff as a pharmaceutical consultant for the appropriate drug therapy for individual patients, including choice of medication, dosage, strength, frequency, and method of administration. Monitors drug therapy, assists to adjust doses based on individual patient responses, collaborates with medical staff on issues related to drug therapy to promote cost effective and appropriate utilization of pharmaceuticals. Assists to prepare pharmaceutical care plans for patients under their care. Provides in-service training programs for physicians, nursing and pharmacy staff members on featured topics. Provides pharmacokinetic evaluations, assesses and reports adverse drug reactions. Assesses potential drug interactions and evaluates outcomes of patient care. Provides drug information to patients. Provides optimal cost-effective therapy using their knowledge of pharmacology, understanding of disease states and knowledge of available dosage forms. Collects and researches data, uses intuition and experience to complement data, and designs work flows and procedures. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with staff, physicians, and patients. Demonstrates adherence to and observes all safety policies and procedures, inclusive of infection control rules and regulations. Demonstrates the knowledge of domestic violence, child, and dependent abuse protocols. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence. Maintains and adheres to HIPAA, employee confidentiality, and privileged communications (patient, employee, and corporation). SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES There are indirect supervisory responsibilities with this position. The Pharmacist will be responsible for supervising clerical and pharmacy technicians.
