JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Lab Technologist (Med Tech) is responsible for the accurate collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of laboratory specimens in accordance with established procedures, regulatory standards, and quality guidelines. This position performs routine and complex diagnostic testing to support high-quality patient care, ensures compliance with quality control and assurance programs, maintains laboratory equipment and supplies, and contributes to training and continuing education efforts. The Med Tech works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and promotes positive, professional relationships with patients, providers, and colleagues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensures positive patient and specimen identification; accurately and completely labels all specimens.
Collects blood specimens via venous or capillary puncture from patients of all ages while adhering to universal precautions and minimizing patient discomfort.
Performs routine and complex laboratory testing according to established protocols and procedures.
Identifies, evaluates, and resolves discrepancies or unexpected test results using sound scientific principles.
Reviews and analyzes quality control data; takes appropriate corrective action to maintain accuracy and precision.
Completes proficiency testing within required timeframes and in compliance with CLIA guidelines.
Operates, monitors, and performs preventative maintenance on automated laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Maintains adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and ensures a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Evaluates, implements, and assists in the development or revision of laboratory procedures and techniques.
Completes competency assessments and participates in ongoing department education, SQM activities, and manual reviews.
Trains and mentors new laboratory staff.
Reviews patient medical records as needed to support testing and result interpretation.
Maintains positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
Complies with all hospital policies, the Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
Must be free from governmental sanctions related to healthcare and/or financial practices.

Education
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field preferred.
Associate's degree in a laboratory-related field acceptable with required certification.

As an **Acute Pharmacy Technician,** you will refill the Pyxis machine, fill the carousel, automation, IVs, sterile and non-sterile compounding, general fills, and running stat medications to rooms/patients. Having extensive hospital experience including sterile compounding and Pyxis automated dispensing machines will be helpful in this role. **Our full-time technicians work 4, 10-hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays. Shift times vary between 6:30AM - 5PM, 7AM - 5:30PM, 7:30AM - 6PM or 11:30AM - 10PM with the potential for the schedule to change based on business needs.**

POSITION SUMMARY
This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacist performing routine duties in packaging, distribution, non-sterile compounding, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. Serves as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist. Becomes proficient in preparing compounded intravenous medications, total parenteral nutrition products, and chemotherapeutic agents within compliance with USP regulations. Effectively uses pharmacy computer systems to investigate and respond to missing medication requests. Consistently demonstrates an ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. May educate and train peer Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, Technician Trainees, and volunteers. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Identifies medications and other items for reorder as necessary to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies. Receives, checks-in, and restocks medications ordered through the wholesaler and other vendors verifying all quantities against invoices. Assesses practical ways to deal with shorted items and short-dated or unusable items.
2. Manages users within the automated dispensing technology database as per policy. Investigates discrepancies and troubleshoots malfunctions in automated dispensing technology.
3. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and is customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff. Responds to standard requests from internal customers. Interacts primarily with department personnel, cross-department personnel, internal customers, patients and physicians.
4. May use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after checking by a pharmacist. When allowed by law and policy, and upon completion of proper training/competency assessment, may restock automated dispensing technology using barcode scanning verification devices. Restocks medications to all areas outside automated dispensing technology which may include but not limited to trays, code carts and emergency boxes.
5. Compounds non-sterile medication products. Understands and appropriately follows all product worksheets/recipes for documentation and check processes. Understands and adheres to all applicable USP compounding guidelines. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently performs calibrations of equipment and accurately measures components for compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging. Completes accurate documentation of medications compounded and repackaged per policy.
6. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with all policies, laws, and regulations. Performs quality control activities such as monthly nursing unit inspections and pharmacy section checks in a timely manner. Completes documentation of refrigerator temperatures, and equipment maintenance activities as required.
7. Handles narcotic medications following all federal and legal requirements as set through policy and procedure. Understands all regulatory requirements for receiving, compounding, repackaging, and distribution for controlled substances. Consistently adheres to all storage and inventory movement documentation requirements for controlled substances.
8. Becomes proficient in performing compounding and labeling of intravenous non-hazardous compounds using proper sterile and aseptic technique as appropriate to the site of care. Understands the different product lines in sterile populations (adult, pediatric, and neonate). Completes all required environmental cleaning procedures. Documents all required tasks and other information per policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Pharmacy Technician licensure and active Pharmacy Technician certification OR Pharmacy Intern licensure in the state of practice.
Incumbents in Arizona are also required to provide the AZ Board of Pharmacy Wallet Card at time of hire.
Ability to complete moderate to difficult mathematical calculations using a hand-held calculator is required. Strong customer service focus, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, prioritization capabilities, superior problem-solving skills, and ability to multi-task. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly medication management information system software, Microsoft applications and automated dispensing systems. Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.
Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

The Pharmacy Technician will apply established management protocols to review and process prescriptions, which may require interaction with healthcare providers, patients, and their families.
The program operates from multiple physical locations as well as various virtual (home office) setups, depending on the tasks at hand. In the past fiscal year, the program has handled millions of prescriptions across a diverse range of sources from across the country.
Read and interpret prescriptions for completeness.
Identify missing pertinent information and correspond with providers or patients for clarification as needed.
Enter correct drug strength, dosage form, directions, quantity and day's supply into the patient's medication profile per Meds by Mail (MbM) policy.
Process prescription refills and electronic prescription renewal requests. The prescription entry will be verified by a pharmacist.
Read computer screens and select specific drugs and products required to fill a prescription by name, strength, quantity, refill number and directions.
Process patient letters, including return and back-order letters.
Work in various queues including adding new providers to MbM provider database and work in various specialty pharmacy teams.
Operate various types of pharmacy automation and office equipment including, but not limited to scanner, fax, computer software and hardware, printers, etc.
Utilize pharmacy information systems to identify basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same drug class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention.
Process medications that are returned to MbM facilities according to MbM Policy.
Perform call center tasks according to MbM policies and procedures and all applicable federal and state laws, documents oral disclosures in the patient's electronic health record.
Report medication errors and quality issues in alignment with MbM Quality and Safety reporting program.
Participate in reviewing medication histories, allergies, adverse drug reactions, and drug therapy compliance with patients and significant family members or caregivers.
Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
Must be Certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
Must possess six months of experience in retail or hospital pharmacy setting OR be a graduate of an Academic Technician Training Educational Program.

Job Summary: Meds by Mail (MbM): Meds by Mail is the overall pharmacy program; Virtual Pharmacy Service (VPS) is a program within MbM. MbM supports other programs including, but not be limited to, Indian Health Services (IHS), Veterans Choice, and other VHA-Integrated Veterans Care (IVC) or pharmacy benefits management (PBM) sponsored programs. Meds by Mail applies approved management protocols to review and process external prescriptions that may, at times, necessitate interactions with physician offices, patients and/or their family or representative. MbM consists of three physical sites: Dublin, GA, Cheyenne, WY, Murfreesboro, TN. There are also various virtual (home office) locations, depending on the type of job tasks performed. MbM processed 3.6 million prescriptions (paper and e-scripts) for Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) in FY21. Prescriptions sent to MbM originate from non-VA providers located in all 50 states plus all US Territories and US Possessions. MbM expects a 3-5% yearly increase in prescription volume over the next five years. MbMs Virtual Pharmacy Service (VPS) provides prescription verification assistance to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) Pharmacies of the United States and territories at a per prescription cost recovery. By the end of FY 2021, MbM serviced 32 VAMCs verifying 4.9 million prescriptions. MbM anticipates substantial growth in the VPS program over the next 5 years. MbM forecasts up to 50 VAMCs will participate in the VPS to varying degrees.

Personnel Qualifications and Duties:

Contractor Personnel Security Requirements
All Contractor employees who require access to the Department of Veterans Affairs computer systems must be the subject of a background investigation. In the performance of this contract, contract employees must be neat, clean, well groomed, and must otherwise exercise good personal hygiene, in accordance with the supported CMOP policies.
