Bargaining Unit: UUP Job Summary: The Department of Pharmacy at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Assistant / Pharmacy Technician. The successful candidate will: * Assist Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory and maintaining patient records as directed by the Associate Director of Pharmacy; enter all medication orders for verification. * Order, receive, and stock inventory from medication distributor daily; repack bulk pharmaceuticals. * Participate in inventory functions, such as conducting routine expired drug checks, including, but not limited to, to recall removal with communication to the Pharmacist. * Demonstrate competency in restocking, unloading, refilling, and discrepancy resolution; prioritizes work to ensure completion of all task prior to end of shift. * Maintain sanitary and orderly conditions; clean and maintain equipment with proper documentation in logs as per policy and procedures. * Utilize several information systems and interact with service providers, patients and family member while documenting call activity. * Process prescription refills and new orders, to include: obtaining appropriate information from patient, refill confirmation when appropriate, review pending refills with the supervising Pharmacist, generate refill documentation, and process third party claim adjudication. * Provide one stop resolution, demonstrating excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. * Dispense the required drug information paperwork for each prescription at point of sale, and offer counseling by a Pharmacist. * Deliver discharge medication to patient bedside through the meds-to-beds program, as needed. * Maintain competence required for current position; if PTCB certified at the time of hire, maintain certification in good standing; complete all ongoing education and training as assigned by the department. * Contribute to the organization's overall process improvement activities; demonstrate critical thinking skills in identifying and analyzing problems and recommending solutions; demonstrate competency of all department policies and procedures. * Promote a culture of safety as it relates to identifying safety and security risks proactively, and working to prevent injuries and/or harm to patients, visitors, or members of the SUNY Downstate community; observe the patient safety goals and commit to safe behavior and standards. * Interact with others in a positive and friendly manner; adhere to patient experience philosophy and customer service standards; represent SUNY Downstate in a positive manner, focusing on institutional core values, which drive innovation and discovery, respect of people, service to community; value integrity and embrace diversity and inclusion. * Demonstrate sensitivity to patient/family special needs, and be accountable for addressing each special need (unique personal history, physical limitations, belief system, language, communication style, literacy, health status). * Use ethical principles to guide decision and actions; recognize the value of each individual within a diverse and multicultural environment; treats others with respect and dignity. * Demonstrate/model effective communication skills when interacting with customers, visitors, patients and co-workers; give and accepts constructive feedback; welcome and assist with orientation of new staff. * Deliver medication to patients at bedside required by the Meds-to-Beds Program. Required Qualifications: Candidates must fulfill one of the following in order to meet minimum qualifications: * New York State Pharmacy Technician License and National Pharmacy Technician Certification. * National Pharmacy Technician Certification plus 6-months of Pharmacy Technician experience, and New York State Pharmacy Technician license within 6-months. * 1-year of Pharmacy Technician experience (or successful completion of a military or other accredited Pharmacy Technician training program). Will be required to receive the National Pharmacy Technician Certification within 18-months of hire and New York State Pharmacy Technician License within 6-months of national certification. Additionally: * Strong ability to work independently. * Proficient computer skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other basic programs. * Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects.
