Day-in-the-Life of a Pharmacy Technician in-Training:

  • Enter prescription information including but not limited to: patient searches, prescriber searches, drug selection, prescription interpretation, insurance billing, and basic documentation.
  • Accept customer and prescription information required to process new and refill prescriptions, including refill authorization from doctor offices.
  • Retrieve medication from inventory.
  • Create prescription labels and put them on prescription containers.
  • Place medication into prescription containers.
  • Complete paperwork related to filling prescriptions and input customer and prescription data into the computer.
  • Assist with maintaining the Pharmacy department by keeping it clean and in order.
  • Assist in inventory management processes including order review, inventory returns, restocking shelves, and physical inventory preparation.
  • Administer Rite Aid programs including FlavoRx, Living More, etc.

Taking care of patients is not a 9-5 job. Our Pharmacy Technicians come into this role knowing that they will be working weekdays, weekends, evening shifts, and some holidays. Appalachian Regional Healthcare pharmacist technician trainee job description

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, Supervisor, and/or Director of Pharmacy Services, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties to ensure all medication needs and regulatory compliance standards are met for our patients for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system, intravenous admixture program, and outpatient pharmacy including retail and specialty pharmacy. Responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, safely and accurately fill patient prescriptions, provide exceptional customer services, prepare intravenous medication, including but not limited to, chemotherapeutic preparations, hyper-alimentations and antibiotics, fill automated medication dispensing system with medications, procure and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver supplies to nursing units, and inventory management.
Responsibilities
1. With the use of an automated dispensing system printout, pulls medications for automated dispensing machine re-supply.
2. Fills patient medication envelopes with the correct medication from computer labels prior to each run.
3. Fills and delivers controlled substance orders to nursing units and ancillary departments according to policy and procedure.
4. Delivers checked medications to the nursing units. Refills automated dispensing system machines to prescribed par levels. Reports unusual occurrences to the pharmacists.
5. Restocks nursing units, operating room, recovery room and ancillary departments with a predetermined supply of floor stock medications and supplies.
6. Maintains and restocks individual filling stations and work areas, including all satellites while contributing to the maintenance of a fixed, minimal level of pharmacy inventory.
7. Reorders pharmacy supplies from the hospital warehouse.
8. Bills/credits patient medications by use of the computer charging system or the remote charging system.
9. Maintains pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.
10. Generates reports and labels to compile and arranges a work list for the preparation of an adequate number of IV admixtures to cover a 24-hour period.
11. Assembles materials for the preparation of the daily supply of IVs including medication labels, medications, solutions, syringes, needles and administration sets and other equipment necessary.
12. Labels a predetermined supply of IV bags and syringes with the computer-generated patient name and drug/dose label. Ensures that all IVs are properly labeled with the information deemed necessary by the Intravenous Admixture Guidelines.
13. Routinely checks expiration dates of medication in the Pharmacy Department and on the nursing units. Rotates and recycles stock when needed.
14. Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job related hazards.
15. Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
16. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
17. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmental to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
18. Engages customers and patients to provide quality customer service
19. Utilizes pharmacy information system to correctly enter patient and drug information, filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications.
20. Assists pharmacist in maintaining workflow.
21. Responsible and accountable for registering sales on cash register, collecting payment and reconciling payments.
22. Perform non-sterile compounding and recordkeeping
23. Updates patient records including allergies, demographics, health, and insurance information
24. Prepares prescriptions for shipping to patient
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Nonessential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that are not critical to the performance of the job. Following are the nonessential functions of the job, along with the corresponding performance standards.
1. Assists non-pharmacy individuals with pharmacy functions and supplies.
2. Answers the telephone and directs calls to appropriate pharmacy staff.
3. Assists in the performance of ongoing quality assurance to assess the operation of the Department.
4. Assists in monthly inspections of medication storage areas within pharmacy, at each nursing unit and ancillary departments.
5. Assists in inventory control and maintains adequate supplies necessary for the daily operation of the
Department.
6. May be required to receive drug orders, verify contents of orders against packing slips and purchase orders.
7. Unpacks merchandise and restocks shelves.
8. Notifies the pharmacist or Director of problems with stock levels and inventory supplies
9. Assists in the training of other personnel.
10. Contributes to the enhancement of pharmacy services through suggestions for improvements in unit dose drug distribution systems.
11. Deviates from daily routine when necessary to prepare and process any new medication orders.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Enrolled in an eligible pharmacy technician training program (training and certification to be completed within one calendar year of hire date)

Minimum Work Experience

• Six to 12 months of pharmacy experience preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications

• Registration with the Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician (Kentucky and West Virginia) or technician trainee (West Virginia only)
• Pharmacy Technician Certification Board: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) within one calendar year of hire date

• Math and computer skills
