Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians.
Processes (corrects and resubmits) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner, and performs other clerical duties, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of Company asset protection techniques, and files claims for warehouse overages (merchandise received, but not billed), shortages (merchandise billed, but not received), order errors or damaged goods involving Rx drugs.
May assist pharmacist in administering clinical services including the collection and proper labeling of blood/urine samples from patients and other clinical services as required; assists pharmacy staff in coordination of clinical services, Walgreens healthcare clinics and external providers.
Assists Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in developing and maintaining good relationships with the local medical community, including physicians, nurses, and other health care providers, by medical provider detailing and outreach to health groups, retirement homes, nursing homes, and other forums for enhancing growth opportunities.
Assists with exterior and interior maintenance by ensuring the Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies, clean, neat and orderly in condition and appearance.
Complies with all company policies and procedures; maintains respectful relationships with coworkers.
Completes special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
Training & Personal Development

Basic Qualifications

Pharmacy Technician Specialist Department: Pharmacy Full Time: 40 hours per week Reports To: Pharmacy Director Status: Non-Exempt The individual will assist the pharmacist with assigned clinical, clerical, and administrative duties. These duties include supporting pharmacy dispensing functions related to written or electronic prescription orders. The individual will accept patient requests for prescription refills, prepare prescription labels, count and measure medications, and perform other lawful tasks required to dispense medications. The role also includes maintaining patient records and handling related cash transactions.
Pharmacy Tech Duties & Responsibilities
* Request authorization for a refill from the prescribing practitioner
* Obtain and enter patient or prescription data into the patient information system
* Serve as a primary contact for patients and providers, handling complex inquiries, coordinating refills, and resolving issues
* Delegate workflow tasks to maintain efficiency
* Processing complex insurance claims
* Preparing a prescription label
* Retrieve medication from stock, count or measure medication and place the medication in its final container
* Affix a prescription label to its final container
* Place ancillary information on the prescription label
* Prepackage and label drugs for dispensing by a pharmacist
* Stock and order prescription medications and supplies for the pharmacy
* Count down the register
* Fill out paperwork for cash deposit
* Promote the mission, vision and values of the organization in all interactions
* Report to work as scheduled
* Work closely with Pharmacist on patient care
* Other duties as assigned
Clerical Duties & Responsibilities
* Process Prescriptions
* Manage Inventory and monitor drug stock, including audits, handling drug shortages, managing returns of expired or recalled items, and coordinating with vendors
* Handle customer service
* Organize files
* Answer phones
* Collect insurance information
* Cleaning and organizing the pharmacy
* Train, mentor, and guide other technicians, setting high standards, and assisting with scheduling
* Leading Process Improvement (PI) and Quality Improvement (QI) projects to optimize clinical outcomes and operational efficiency
Education & Experience
* High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or 3+ years of directly related experience required.
* National certification (Certified Pharmacy Technician) required.
* Demonstrated experience with complex prescription processing, insurance adjudication, inventory management, and pharmacy operations.
* Prior experience in leadership, training/mentoring, or project coordination preferred.
* Advanced certifications are considered a plus.
Technical & Clinical Skills
* Advanced knowledge of pharmacy workflows, medication dispensing, and patient record systems.
* Capability to accurately prepare prescription labels and verify medication counts/measures.
* Proficiency in handling refill authorizations, insurance claims, and pharmacy information systems.
* Strong understanding of HIPAA, controlled substance regulations, and pharmacy compliance standards.
Leadership & Operational Skills
* Ability to train, mentor, and guide other pharmacy technicians.
* Demonstrated skill in delegating workflow tasks and maintaining operational efficiency.
* Active participation or leadership in Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives.
Communication & Customer Service
* Excellent verbal and written communication with patients, providers, pharmacists, and insurers.
* Strong customer service orientation and conflict resolution ability.

Resolve customer questions and concerns by communicating effectively with the customer and the management team and support staff in an efficient manner.
