Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of highly advanced technical and clerical support tasks that are vital to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparation and distribution of unit dose medications, compounded sterile and non-sterile products, outpatient prescriptions, stock orders, and the operation and maintenance of pharmacy and area-specific technologies. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. This requires successful experience and performance as a pharmacy technician III.
These tasks are designed to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other regulatory agencies as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed pharmacist.
Staffing assignments will include roles throughout central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership
+ Train new or existing staff members.
+ Provide direction and guidance to pharmacy staff in following policy and procedure while promoting professional behaviors and attitudes.
+ Provide feedback to pharmacy leadership about efficiency of workflow process and general staff performance.
+ Lead departmental quality improvement or group research projects as assigned.
+ Oversee drug distribution activities and process, including leading, troubleshooting, maintaining, and triaging activities and issues as appropriate.
Staffing and Competency
+ Perform medication deliveries and distribute medications to patient care areas employing barcode scanning.
+ Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
+ Return unused medications employing barcode scanning and perform medication expiration date checking as assigned.
+ Fill medication requisitions and type labels for ambulatory and discharge prescriptions for all applicable patient care areas.
+ Manage inventory in all pharmacy areas and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and charge stock orders, ADC shrinkage, and patient and clinic requisitions.
+ Provide information and triage phone calls to the appropriate individual within the pharmacy department when answering the phone.
+ Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by staff pharmacists or pharmacy leadership.
+ Maintain clean and organized work areas.
+ May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique, distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control, or maintain code cart inventory per policies and procedures as applicable.
Technology
+ Utilize area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
+ Practice preventative maintenance of area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
+ Troubleshoot aforementioned technology failures to minimize operational downtime and maximize uptime.
+ Assist in the implementation of new area-specific technology as mentioned above.
+ Follow processes for obtaining manufacturer service if needed for repairs.
Quality and Safety
+ Follow institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
+ Demonstrate accountability and ownership of job responsibilities.
+ Exhibit and promote professional behaviors and attitudes related to communication, punctuality, workplace attire, personal internet or phone use, and teamwork.

Manages emergency medication inventory in carts/kits, including ordering and maintaining adequate supply, accurately restocking, organizing to ensure consistent placement and uniformity, documenting medications used for charge purposes, removal of expired/damage products, and performing regular checks on each unit.
9. Maintains medication rooms by ensuring all appropriate medications are stocked in patient specific bins in the automated dispensing cabinets and by removing expired and discontinued medications.
10. Empties return bins in the automated dispensing cabinets as part of the weekly schedule.
11. Utilizes the unit-dose machine to package bulk medications and appropriately compounds non-sterile medications following standard formulas and procedures.
12. Performs assigned cycle counts of the carousel on a regular basis, maintaining adequate records of completion.
13. Takes accountability for medication management in their assigned patient care area.
14. Assists in keeping the Pharmacy neat and clean by caring for equipment and cleaning after compounding prescriptions, manufacturing bulk medications, unit dosing, etc.
15. Conduct temperature inspections of the refrigerator in the automated dispensing machine.
16. Performs financial transaction activities which may include: Preparing patient billing information; billing third party prescription benefits; Troubleshoots insurance issues; and selects and uses pharmacy pay codes, payers and plans appropriate to each type of transaction.
17. Inspects assigned medication storage areas monthly maintaining adequate records of inspection. All assigned areas must be inspected every month to meet standard.
18. Greets and assists customers upon arrival to the pharmacy. Participates in point of sale cash transactions. Engages in customer services activities.
19. Provides customer or patient assistance over the phone. Triage calls as appropriate.
20. All assigned work is completed accurately by the end of each shift and all necessary quality control paperwork is completed accurately and with reasonable speed.
21. Communicates effectively with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to meet the needs of these departments and maintains a positive working relationship and image of the pharmacy department.

6 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Non-Sterile Hazardous Drug compounding. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in hazardous room procedures which include gowning, compounding and cleaning of the Biological Safety cabinet. Must be proficient enough to train and educate new technicians and students in this area. Must show proficiency in monthly cleaning breakdown of the biological safety cabinet.
7 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Sterile Products production if trained in that area. Performs required cleanings and restocking when required. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in clean room procedures and sterile product preparation. Fully understands concepts of gowning, hand washing and cleaning of all areas. Able to demonstrate timely recording of tasks required in electronic signature logs which include cleaning logs, temperature logs and humidity logs in the IV room.
8 - Performs all duties and responsibilities dealing with customer service, quality assurance, inventory management, maintaining a orderly, clean and safe environment.
9 - Performs anything else deemed necessary by their supervisor or Pharmacist on duty (other duties required).

Minimum Education - Preferred
High school level of education.
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum of 3 months work experience as Pharmacy Technician preferred. Hospital pharmacy experience desirable.

GLFHC is currently seeking a Pharmacy Technician. The Pharmacy Technician supports the Pharmacist in the prescription fulfillment process.
Must be able to don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Mixes pharmaceutical preparations, fills bottles with prescribed tablets and capsules, and prepares labels for bottles.
Assists Pharmacist to prepare and dispense medication both over the counter and using unit does medication methods.
Answers telephone courteously and receive orders. Assist customer with prescriptions as well as front store products and in the use of all products.
Processes records of medication and equipment dispensed to customers, compute charges, enters data in computer and bills customers and/ or Third Party.
Cleans workspace and equipment and sterilizes glassware according to prescribed methods. Insures cleanliness of entire store including: dusting shelves and product; vacuuming floors; sweeping, and removing trash.
Sets up prescription orders for in-store pickup and/or delivery.
Collects payments and reconciles the Register at the end of the day following established procedures.
Qualifications:
High school Diploma or equivalent
Must be registered with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
One to three years of customer service experience.
Valid Driver's License
Bilingual, Spanish and English
Ability to work flexible hours, evenings and weekend coverage
