Operations
Under the supervision by the pharmacist, assist in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with state, federal, and company policy. Reviews and complies with the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct.
Performs duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacist and Store Manager including utilizing pharmacy systems to enter patient and drug information, ensuring information is entered correctly, filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting and pouring pharmaceutical drugs, verifying medicine is correct, and checking for possible interactions. Assists pharmacists in scheduling and maintaining work flow.
Reports, immediately, prescription errors to pharmacist on duty and adheres to Company policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.
Strictly adheres to the Walgreen Co. policy regarding Good Faith Dispensing during all applicable prescription dispensing activities.
Responsible and accountable for registering all related sales on assigned cash register, collects and handles cash as required. Takes customer to OTC aisle when possible to assist in locating products.
Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist, including those to physicians.
Processes (corrects and resubmits) manual claims for third party program prescription services in a timely and efficient manner, and performs other clerical duties, as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
Assists and supports Pharmacy Department on inventory management activities, such as, ordering, unpacking, checking and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals. Maintains knowledge of Company asset protection techniques, and files claims for warehouse overages (merchandise received, but not billed), shortages (merchandise billed, but not received), order errors or damaged goods involving Rx drugs.
May assist pharmacist in administering clinical services including the collection and proper labeling of blood/urine samples from patients and other clinical services as required; assists pharmacy staff in coordination of clinical services, Walgreens healthcare clinics and external providers.
Assists Pharmacy Manager and Staff Pharmacist in developing and maintaining good relationships with the local medical community, including physicians, nurses, and other health care providers, by medical provider detailing and outreach to health groups, retirement homes, nursing homes, and other forums for enhancing growth opportunities.
Assists with exterior and interior maintenance by ensuring the Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies, clean, neat and orderly in condition and appearance.
Complies with all company policies and procedures; maintains respectful relationships with coworkers.
Completes special assignments and other tasks as assigned.
Training & Personal Development
Earns and maintains PTCB certification through the designated PTCB training program and/or state required certification/registration. Otherwise, earns PTCB certification as condition of promotion to senior technician.
Attends training requested by Manager and acquires continuing education credits. Maintains knowledge and skill in healthcare and pharmacy, including latest news and developments.
Basic Qualifications
Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. (Except in Puerto Rico)
Requires willingness to work flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer six months of experience in a retail environment.
Prefer to have prior work experience with Walgreens.
Prefer good math skills so they can fill prescriptions accurately, including counting, measuring and weighing medications.
Prefer good computer skills.
Prefer the knowledge of store inventory control.
Prefer PTCB certification.

Scope of Work

Position Overview

Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and according to policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the department and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the Pharmacy Technician II assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. The Pharmacy Technician II is a role that builds upon the skills and competencies of the Pharmacy Technician I as part of a professional career pathway. Fills orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist. Performs a variety of related technical, clerical and supply duties. The duties may vary somewhat depending on location of work (i.e. outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy, etc) or shift assignment. The technician will be responsible for competency in the requirement of Pharmacy Technician I as well as though outlined below in the Additional Job Description.. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
* 2-5 years of relevant pharmacy experience in a hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan is required.
* Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0.
* Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
* Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action in coordination with the pharmacists.
* Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel and external customers;
* Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers
* Self-motivation
* Accuracy and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks
* Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and to provide effective timely follow-up as needed.
Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Conditions exist more than 90% of the work time.
Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
* Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of a Pharmacy Technician I
* Job duties specific to outpatient/retail pharmacy includes: all those required for Pharmacy Technician I as well as outpatient pharmacy purchasing of supplies and medications.
Functions in the role of OR Technician, ED Technician or Decentralized Pharmacy Technician
* Job duties specific to hospital or infusion pharmacy includes: all those required for Pharmacy Technician I as well as one or more of the following: assisting the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications; utilizing the teach back method, able to provide patient medication education under the direction or supervision of the pharmacist; perform sterile medication compounding, which may include parenteral nutrition preparation, following institution policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP ; running and maintaining any pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment; assisting the pharmacist, with oversight in reviewing and comprehending pharmacokinetic reports, collect and enter patient height/weight into the department documentation system, review and comprehend patient lab reports or other unit specific information.

Scope of Work
Under the direction of a Pharmacist, provides technical assistance, processing and preparing medications and supplies. Works with multiple medication automation systems. Delivers medications and supplies to patient care areas. Triages phone calls and messages from multidisciplinary team members. Able to work in complex pharmacy areas (satellites, sterile product compounding, controlled substance handling, inventory management).
* Prepares supplies / medication, including complex sterile formulations under the direction of a Pharmacist. May prepare hazardous or biologic products when properly trained and competencies are passed.
* Prepares and packages bulk medications into unit of use packaging.
* Handles controlled substances for pharmacy and patient care areas under direct supervision of a pharmacist per federal and state law.
* Delivers pharmacy prepared medications, controlled substances and supplies to various nursing stations/patient care areas.
* Maintains a clean and organized work area.
* Maintains all requirements for CPhT certifications. Completes all Spectrum Health assigned competencies by assigned due dates.
Qualifications
* Required High School Diploma or equivalent
* Preferred Associate's Degree
* Hospital experience Preferred
* LIC-Pharmacist Intern - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required Or
* LIC-Pharmacy Technician Temp - STATE_MI State of Michigan Must obtain full licensure w/in 90 days of hire. Upon Hire required And
