Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. The mission of our program is to develop a pharmacist with the skills and abilities to successfully practice as an acute care pharmacist, adjunct faculty member, and/or be prepared to pursue and complete PGY2 residency training. This residency also includes developing a core skill set in drug information and literature evaluation, pharmacotherapy evaluation and management, project-based research and team functioning, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction. Our residency program will provide each resident with specific learning experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his/her practice skills. The resident will be evaluated on ASHP goals/objectives as assigned on various learning experiences (rotations, longitudinal experiences, presentations, etc.) throughout the year. The ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic is used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and progressive learning experience throughout the year. Residents have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy. An optional teaching certificate provided by one of the local colleges of pharmacy may be obtained during the residency. The resident will also gain experience in giving formal presentations and pharmacy research projects that are designed to improve patient care quality and safety throughout the year. This residency will tentatively begin on June 15, 2026, with one residency position available. Monroe Carell also offers a PGY2 specialty residency in Pediatrics. PGY2 specialty residencies require the successful completion of a PGY1 residency year. Monroe Carell pharmacy residency positions beginning in 2026 for postgraduate year one (PGY1) or postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs are offered to applicants through the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the "Match"). The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is responsible for establishing the rules of the Match, and for monitoring the implementation of the Match. The administration and conduct of the Match are carried out by National Matching Services Inc. on behalf of ASHP. Key Responsibilities: A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. The focus is on clinical rotations in direct patient care settings. Residents also gain experience in pharmacy administration, medication use system, drug information and pharmacy research projects that are designed to improve patient care, quality and safety. The resident will draft a manuscript of their research project that is suitable for publication. Required rotations include longitudinal rotations of Practice Management, Clinical on Call and hospital staffing, 2 months of pediatric medicine and 1 month each of Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiac ICU, Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Oncology, Antimicrobial Stewardship, NICU-TPN, Project/Research and Orientation. Elective rotations and other learning experiences will be tailored to the resident's interests. Staffing requirements vary but the resident will gain extensive experience in pharmacy operations, including but not limited to, the sterile products, central dispensing, narcotic procedures and assisting with clinical pharmacy coverage and monitoring throughout the year. Position Qualifications (Required): Applicants must submit their application in the PhORCAS application portal by January 2nd. Interested applicants should submit the following through PhORCAS: curriculum vitae, letter of interest, three letters of reference and official pharmacy school transcripts. References should have comments on at least 50% of the items with at least two references from clinical preceptors preferred. No formal letter of recommendation upload necessary. Applicants invited to interview must complete an online application with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the Monroe Carell PGY1 Pharmacy Residency. Applicants are required to be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and must obtain unrestricted licensure to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee by July 31st of their residency year. Residents who are not fully licensed by this date will have modifications to their scheduled responsibilities. Failure to obtain Tennessee licensure by October 1st will result in dismissal from the residency program and termination from employment at VUMC, unless licensure is anticipated by October 31st. The mission of the PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy residency is to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to specialized practice that meets the needs of pediatric patients. The resident will be involved with active inpatient services which includes multiple levels of critical care and acute care. If desired, Monroe Carell PGY2 residents will be able to focus in a particular area of pediatrics (e.g. critical care pediatric specialty practice designation, ID, heme/onc, etc). Graduates are well equipped to be fully integrated members of the interdisciplinary pediatric care team and able to make complex pharmacotherapy recommendations. In addition, graduates are experienced in short-term research in pediatric pharmacotherapy, excel in their ability to teach other health professionals, and possess the experience necessary to exercise leadership for pediatric practice in the health system. Our residency program will provide each resident with specific learning experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his/her practice skills. The resident will be evaluated on ASHP goals/objectives as assigned on various learning experiences (rotations, longitudinal experiences, presentations, etc.) throughout the year. The ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic is used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and progressive learning experience throughout the year. This residency will tentatively begin on July 6, 2026, with one residency position available. PGY2 specialty residencies require the successful completion of a PGY1 residency year and pharmacy licensure in the state of Tennessee. VUMC pharmacy residency positions beginning in 2026 for postgraduate year one (PGY1) or postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs are offered to applicants through the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the "Match"). The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is responsible for establishing the Rules of the Match, and for monitoring the implementation of the Match. The administration and conduct of the Match are carried out by National Matching Services Inc. on behalf of ASHP. Key Responsibilities: A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. Didactic discussions, reading assignments, case presentations, written assignments, or direct patient care experiences will allow the pediatric pharmacy resident to understand and appreciate the implications of areas including but not limited to neonatal and pediatric intensive care, infectious disease principles and pediatric disease states both unique and common. Comprehensive care of these patients includes the full scope of their pharmacotherapeutic needs regardless of their admission diagnosis. Residents will develop expertise in pharmacotherapy of typical chronic and acute medical conditions occurring in pediatric patients. Residents will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy and possibly PGY1 Pharmacy residents from our own institution, with an optional teaching certificate provided by one of the local colleges of pharmacy. The resident will also have opportunities to provide didactic lectures to pharmacy students, medical students, as well as in-service presentations to pharmacy and nursing staff. The resident will gain experience in giving formal presentations and completing pharmacy research projects with a manuscript suitable for publication. Required learning experiences for PGY2 Pediatrics include one month each of PICU, NICU, pediatric medicine, oncology, ID, project/research and longitudinal rotations including hospital staffing, clinical on call and practice management. For PGY2 Pediatrics with designation in critical care, required learning experiences also include: PCICU, ED, adult Trauma/Burn ICU and resident's choice of an additional critical care rotation. Elective and other learning experiences, such as cardiology, ED, GI, neurology, stem cell transplant, solid organ transplant and more, will be tailored to the residents' interests. Staffing requirements vary but the resident will gain extensive experience in pharmacy operations, including but not limited to, the sterile products, central dispensing, narcotic procedures and assisting with clinical pharmacy coverage and monitoring throughout the year. Position Qualifications (Required): Applicants must submit their application in the PhORCAS application portal by January 2nd. Interested applicants should submit the following through PhORCAS: curriculum vitae, letter of interest, three letters of reference and official pharmacy school transcripts. References should have comments on at least 50% of the items with at least two references from clinical preceptors preferred. No formal letter of recommendation upload necessary. Applicants invited to interview must complete an online application with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the Monroe Carell PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Residency. Applicants are required to be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency. Unrestricted licensure to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee must be obtained by July 31st of their residency year. Residents who are not fully licensed by this date will have modifications to their scheduled responsibilities. Failure to obtain Tennessee licensure by October 1st will result in dismissal from the residency program and termination from employment at VUMC, unless licensure is anticipated by October 31st. Verification of professional degree conferred, as well as Tennessee Pharmacist licensure occurs in accordance with VUMC policy. Additional Qualification Information: VUMC will conduct pre-employment background checks on all final candidates for all positions in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. The background check process will begin after a contingent offer of employment is made and accepted by the selected/matched residency candidate. Pharmacy employees and candidates who are conditionally offered employment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center will also be tested for compliance with alcohol and drug use in accordance with VUMC policy.
