    Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of highly advanced technical and clerical support tasks that are vital to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparation and distribution of unit dose medications, compounded sterile and non-sterile products, outpatient prescriptions, stock orders, and the operation and maintenance of pharmacy and area-specific technologies. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. This requires successful experience and performance as a pharmacy technician III. These tasks are designed to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other regulatory agencies as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed pharmacist. Staffing assignments will include roles throughout central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas. Principal Duties and Responsibilities 1. Leadership a. Train new or existing staff members. b. Provide direction and guidance to pharmacy staff in following policy and procedure while promoting professional behaviors and attitudes. c. Provide feedback to pharmacy leadership about efficiency of workflow process and general staff performance. d. Lead departmental quality improvement or group research projects as assigned. e. Oversee drug distribution activities and process, including leading, troubleshooting, maintaining, and triaging activities and issues as appropriate. 2. Staffing and Competency a. Perform medication deliveries and distribute medications to patient care areas employing barcode scanning. b. Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. c. Return unused medications employing barcode scanning and perform medication expiration date checking as assigned. d. Fill medication requisitions and type labels for ambulatory and discharge prescriptions for all applicable patient care areas. e. Manage inventory in all pharmacy areas and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and charge stock orders, ADC shrinkage, and patient and clinic requisitions. f. Provide information and triage phone calls to the appropriate individual within the pharmacy department when answering the phone. g. Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by staff pharmacists or pharmacy leadership. h. Maintain clean and organized work areas. i. May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique, distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control, or maintain code cart inventory per policies and procedures as applicable. 3. Technology a. Utilize area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems. b. Practice preventative maintenance of area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems. c. Troubleshoot aforementioned technology failures to minimize operational downtime and maximize uptime. d. Assist in the implementation of new area-specific technology as mentioned above. e. Follow processes for obtaining manufacturer service if needed for repairs. 4. Quality and Safety a. Follow institutional and departmental policies and procedures. b. Demonstrate accountability and ownership of job responsibilities. c. Exhibit and promote professional behaviors and attitudes related to communication, punctuality, workplace attire, personal internet or phone use, and teamwork. d. Carry out departmental and institutional patient safety initiatives. e. Report safety issues identified during job responsibilities. f. Assist pharmacy department to maintain statistics, data metrics, and workload productivity as applicable. g. Compile, analyze, and report department-specific productivity or workload data for pharmacy leadership. Additional Skills & Qualifications Qualifications 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program desired. 3. Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy 4. Must be a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board 5. Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete training, which includes, but is not limited to: a. Institutional Safety Training b. Make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements in conjunction with specific skills and task related functions. 9. Distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment. 10. Continuously acquire skills necessary in the operation of pharmacy equipment. 11.     The Infusion Pharmacist II is responsible for the oversight of the preparation and compounding, order verification, and dispensing of pharmaceuticals according to the laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy within oncology or sterile compounding. A minimum of 3 years of experience in hospital pharmacy, ambulatory care, or sterile compounding, or 5 years of retail pharmacy experience with 2 years of oncology experience, is required. Alternatively, completion of a PGY1 residency meets the experience requirement. The position also requires a license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with additional licensure needed for some satellite locations.
