Responsibilities
Evaluates physician medication orders for appropriateness of drug, dosage, potential interactions, and route of administration. Makes recommendations for therapy changes to the physician and facility staff as appropriate
Maintains patient/resident database to include appropriate current and past medical history, appropriate clinical and laboratory data, and concurrent medication (including over-the-counter and home remedies)
Ensures that appropriate laboratory tests for monitoring certain high-risk conditions are ordered, evaluated and discussed with appropriate members of the healthcare team
Collaborates with the healthcare team to provide clinical and technical support as needed
Documents all communication with physicians, nurses, other members of the healthcare team and patients/residents and their family members in the medical record
Implements policies and procedures for the safe procurement, storage, distribution and use of drugs and biologicals, as well as disposal of drugs
Obtains, as necessary, and maintains all required documentation in accordance with federal and state regulatory agencies and policy
Informs the Pharmacy Manager of medication related errors
Assists facility/agency staff personnel with procedures relating to safe and effective methods of procuring, maintaining, administering and disposing of drugs
Performs other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy; Pharm D preferred
One year experience in long-term care
Licenses/Certifications: As required by government regulations and business needs
Detail oriented; goal oriented, team player, oral communication

Essential Functions
Responsible for monitoring and/or cleaning the sterile compounding area.
Responsible for ensuring competency of all aspects of staff (both technicians and pharmacists) performing sterile compounding including, but not limited to cleaning, garbing, testing, training and proper compounding procedure.

Complete training and follow procedures for checking the work of another technician in providing IV supplies to patients and/or facilities.
Function as a backup to the Pharmacy Specialist when needed.

As a Junior Non-Certified Pharmacy Tech, you are a critical part of providing pharmacy services to patients within the Monument Health system. Inpatient Pharmacy Technicians have a passion for helping others and do so by preparing sterile compounds, non-sterile compounds, packages, and appropriately labeling medication doses for distribution to patients and operating automated technology. Job Description
Essential Functions:
Create an environment where responsiveness to patient and customer needs is a personal priority. Interact with staff, patients and the public in a courteous and respectful manner using appropriate verbal or written skills.
Restock unit dose medications, liquids and injectables; accurately fill controlled substances and file paperwork; receive orders, unpack supplies, assure items are bar coded and scannable, and place inventory into the appropriate location when relevant to hospital site.
Accurately pick medications from appropriate automated technology for replacement into Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC) or distribution to another campus. Sort and restock/waste returned medications; restock code carts, emergency boxes, and ADCs; deliver medications in a timely manner; answer phones professionally and transfer calls appropriately.
Act as a positive member of the team. Assist in orienting new personnel; use time wisely; communicate pertinent information; work effectively with pharmacists, technicians and other hospital caregivers; work independently without direct supervision; assist other staff and exhibit an approachable, interactive demeanor.
Process and accurately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste. Knowledgeable of appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and necessary action when receiving or manipulating hazardous medications or during hazardous spills.
Maintain ability to effectively navigate computer software, troubleshoot and report problems to prevent repetitive issues in the future.
Participate in department committees as assigned.
All other duties as assigned.
Junior Non-Certified Pharmacy Technicians (16 or 17 years old), can do any job that has not been declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor. At Monument Health, below are examples of duties that CANNOT be performed by a Junior Non-Certified Pharmacy Technicians:
Prohibited from work in any area in which radium, self-luminous compound, incandescent, or thorium salt is used or stored.
May not work in areas with air concentrations exceed 10% of permissible concentrations in the air.
Work in medical facilities, such as X-ray rooms and laboratories where exposure to ionizing radiation is greater than 0.5 rem per year.
Work involving exposure to naturally occurring radiation, such as radiation in soil or sunlight radiation.
Additional Requirements
Required:
Certification - Registration within 30 days of hire- South Dakota Board of Pharmacy
Preferred:
Experience - 1+ years healthcare
Physical Requirements: Heavy work - exerting up to 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or up to 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 33% of the time), and or up to 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
