Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is a small, privately supported, historically Black, four-year liberal arts institution related to the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church.
In 1882 the school was renamed Philander Smith College in honor of the financial contributions of Adeline Smith, widow of Philander Smith.
The first baccalaureate class graduated from Philander Smith College in 1888.
One of its centerpieces is the former U.M. Rose School building, now the Cox Administration Building, designed by the noted Arkansas architect John Parks Almand in 1915, when he was working for Charles L. Thompson.
In May 1936, Doctor Marquis LaFayette Harris succeeded Doctor Taylor as president.
In July 1948 the site of the Little Rock Junior College, adjacent to the South end of Philander Smith's campus, was purchased.
The campus also includes the "Old Gym", a gymnasium built by the WPA during the Great Depression; and a former barracks building of the Camp Robinson Air Force Base, which was moved there in 1948.
The first baccalaureate class graduated from Philander Smith College in 1888. It attained its formal accreditation in 1949 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
He was succeeded by Doctor Walter R. Hazzard, who took office as the seventh president of the college on July 1, 1969.
Doctor Shockley was succeeded by Doctor Hazo W. Carter, who was elected unanimously July 19, 1983 by the Board of Trustees, and took office Aug.
Upon Doctor Titus's retirement on June 30, 1998, Doctor Trudie Kibbe Reed was elected by the Board of Trustees in February 1998, becoming the eleventh and first woman president of Philander Smith College.
The name change was due to the generous donation in 1882 from Philander Smith’s widow, Adele, who believed her husband would have contributed to this cause as he was sympathetic to the work the Methodist Church was championing in the South. It has since been overseen by 12 presidents, including the first woman, alumni Trudie Kibbe Reed, who was selected in 1998.
In October 2004, the Board announced the selection of Doctor Walter M. Kimbrough as the 12th president.
Selected by the Philander Smith College Board of Trustees, Roderick L. Smothers, Ph.D., took office as the College's 14th president on January 5, 2015.
