Philcade Building company history timeline

1883

Born in Iowa in 1883, Waite was an identical twin and one of 10 children.

1899

They finally raised $1,400 for the purpose of building a church in 1899.

1906

Waite moved from Iowa to Indian Territory in 1906 and soon started the Waite Phillips Petroleum Company, quickly becoming a famous oilman.

1908

A new school was built to replace the Dawson School at another location. It described the opening enrollment at 60 students, and how a new system of 9-month (instead of 4 month) school years would begin that coming September of 1908.

1921

The 50 meter/10-story steel and reinforced concrete structure, faced with buff brick, was built in 1921.

1922

Completed in 1922, Atlas Life Building is located between the Philtower and Mid-Continent Tower.

1925

In 1925, he sold the business and began constructing some of Tulsa’s most treasured buildings.

1928

Standing as a beacon of the Tulsa skyline when it was completed in 1928 by architect Edward Buehler Delk, the Philtower still stands out amid other buildings with regal beauty.

Construction was completed in 1928 on the neo-gothic and Art Deco structure, which was financed by Waite Phillips.

1929

Completed in 1929 and considered one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical Art Deco architecture in the United States, Boston Avenue is a work of art.

The Philcade and Philtower buildings are connected by an underground tunnel, built in 1929, that runs beneath 5th street for 80ft.

1942

In 1942 it was sold to Standard Oil and renamed to Stanolind building.

1949

When built, the location at 31st and Harvard was consider “way out in the country”. It was purchased in 1949 and designed to be developed and platted in four different stages.

1979

In 1979, the Philtower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

2016
