The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, butterflies, or other materials. • Transport all specimen samples to a nearby laboratory. • Centrifuge blood samples, depending on if this is allowed in the state you are working in • Performs timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose and lactose tolerance tests. • Process specimens in preparation for analysis and/or shipment to reference laboratories. • Document function checks that may include: refrigerator temperatures and instrument maintenance. • Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status. • Practice infection control and Personal Protective Equipment standards • Complete extensive standardized training and demonstrate competency to perform each job function and commit to perform only those tasks for which documented training has been completed. • Is trained for collection of forensic samples (i.e., legal blood alcohols, aircraft incidents, etc.) and collect appropriately to ensure sample integrity and chain-of-custody maintenance. • Maintains blood collection stations in a clean, hygienic state and replenishes blood collection supplies as needed. Recognize, report and correct potential safety hazards. - Apply knowledge of established MTF standards of care and TJC/CAP/AABB/FDA requirements for clinical and documentation protocols, safety, infection control and performance improvement. The Phlebotomist shall ensure compliance with policies and provide consistent training and guidance for staff members. - Shall perform procedures compatible with the medical facility's operating capacity, standard operating instructions and equipment. Deviations from approved practices shall not be introduced without prior recommendation to, and approval of, the laboratory's authorized representative. - Shall demonstrate initiative and responsibility, work as a team member, manage time effectively, prioritize and perform multiple tasks and adapt to change. The healthcare worker shall treat patients with compassion and empathy, recognize and respect cultural diversity, adapt communications to individual's ability to understand, use professional telephone technique, and use effective and correct verbal and written communications. The use of correct medical terminology is necessary to appropriately receive, organize, prioritize, and transmit information and serve the laboratory's liaison with patients and medical staff members. - Collect blood samples from patients. - Ensures specimens are collected in the amount and type of specimen required (e.g., with or without a particular anticoagulant) for each laboratory test. - Practice proper patient identification, especially when working on hospital floors. - Instructs patients on collection of specimens using collection instructions (e.g., semen samples, stool samples, etc.). - Dresses the skin puncture site after blood collection. Carefully observes the patient for any sign or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and takes appropriate first aid measures to prevent injury and stabilizes the patient. - Label vials with patient names and dates. - Reviews specimen labels and properly labels collected blood specimens with appropriate patient identification information and delivers specimens within the established time frames. - Enters test requests into the electronic medical record system. - Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient. - Collects blood specimens from ambulatory or prone patients via venipuncture, finger, heel, or toe stick, as appropriate, using standardized procedures. The blood collection may require the use of a lancet, butterflies, or other materials. - Transport all specimen samples to a nearby laboratory. - Centrifuge blood samples, depending on if this is allowed in the state you are working in - Performs timed blood collection procedures, such as glucose and lactose tolerance tests. - Process specimens in preparation for analysis and/or shipment to reference laboratories. - Document function checks that may include: refrigerator temperatures and instrument maintenance. - Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status. - Practice infection control and Personal Protective Equipment standards - Complete extensive standardized training and demonstrate competency to perform each job function and commit to perform only those tasks for which documented training has been completed. - Is trained for collection of forensic samples (i.e., legal blood alcohols, aircraft incidents, etc.) and collect appropriately to ensure sample integrity and chain-of-custody maintenance. - Maintains blood collection stations in a clean, hygienic state and replenishes blood collection supplies as needed. Maintains supply levels for drawing stations and shelves daily. - Practices general hospital safety, infection control, aseptic and sterile techniques for safely handling sharps, electrical equipment, and blood or blood by-products. - Ensures all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensures preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed. - Answers telephones, looks up test results in the laboratory computer, and gives test results to requesting healthcare providers/physicians. - Checks Front Desk telephone daily for messages. - Assists with the completion of Front Desk checklists. - Distributes patient customer satisfaction surveys to patients. - Relays patient concerns to flight leadership. - Trains students or new laboratory and clinic personnel on phlebotomy procedures. - Maintains credentialing and all other required training for employment. - Faxes patient reports to providers/physicians as needed. - Maintain patient confidentiality, use appropriate guidelines when releasing information, practice within the scope of education, training and personal capabilities. Shall prepare and maintain medical records and documents accurately. - Processes patient demographic data into the laboratory automated data system or manual system. Identifies and corrects patient data errors. Verifies physician, patient care, and records location identifiers, ward and clinic locations, and provider codes for entering accession information into the computer terminal. Works with wards, clinics, and other medical personnel to resolve missing or incorrect data. - Receives telephone calls and visitors to the laboratory. Determines nature of call or visit. Directs calls or visitors to appropriate personnel, personally provides the information requested when routine or procedural matters of the laboratory are involved. Applies established guidelines concerning the release of information, adhering to the provisions to the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). - Adheres to and maintains a system of supply accountability and inventory management with unit supply custodian to ensure adequate stock levels of consumable supplies are available and minimize waste and ensure uninterrupted services. - Ensures a safe work environment and safe healthcare worker work habits. - Completes applicable documentation to include manual and computer methods. - Provide instruction and training as requested following designation of Preceptor/Instructor status. - Perform other related duties as necessary. **Qualifications** **Minimum Qualifications:** *** Education:** High school equivalent and completion of NAACLS, two-part Phlebotomy program, or successful completion of an Accredited Laboratory Phlebotomist Training Progr **am** * **Experience:** Must have performed 40 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of clinical training and 100 successful venipuncture (including skin punctures).
