Summary:
Responsible for performing all the duties of a phlebotomist including specimen collection, specimen receiving, and specimen referrals.

Performs all patient specimen collections including, but not limited to, venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screen collection, skin tests, and blood, throat, and NP cultures.
Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintain specimen integrity
Demonstrates good communication skills by competently interacting with customers, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, clients, and co-workers.
Operates the laboratory computer system to document specimen information, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned tasks.
Performs other related duties as assigned (stand-by/on-call, inventory, special projects, cross-training, etc.).

Quality Orientation: Helps monitor pending lists, including but not limited to the unreceived specimen log. Supports CLS Quality Assurance program, actively participating in performance improvement activities by Identifying process improvement opportunities and implementing as appropriate. Ensures specimen requirements are maintained during transportation and storage as per protocol. Ensures that specimens sent via tube system are sent successfully before leaving the area. Adheres to Patient Safety Goals as defined by UTSW, TJC, CAP, and other regulatory/accreditation agencies. Performs inventory of supplies as assigned. Provides training to other Phlebotomists as needed. May provide team leadership for other Phlebotomists in the absence of the Lead Phlebotomist.
Ensures all tests are accounted for in the ordering system. If necessary, contacts physician's office or nurse to obtain order clarification/verification prior to collecting specimens. Tracks every specimen to ensure specimen integrity, accounting particularly for those samples which must be transported to other locations with fewer than three occasions of errors involving maintaining specimen batches (opening, reconciling and closing).
Orders and Monitors supplies and ensures all are within expiration date. Ensures that expired supplies are discarded and none are in the general supply, storage or on phlebotomy carts. Phlebotomy carts need to be fully stocked with required supplies; delivered to the specific staging area; document daily use on current phlebotomy log. Keeps work area well organized and free from clutter, stocked with essential supplies and decontaminated with proper cleaning solutions and disposal of wastes and trash in appropriate containers.
Utilizes the Risk Management and Process Improvement tools (Event Reports) in an accurate and timely way to identify issues concerning Quality Improvement and assists coworkers in this process as needed. Follows chain of command when reporting unsafe practices observed.

Maintains required records and documentation.

Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Childrens range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Every effort will be made to collect specimens in the least traumatic manner to both child and family, to include attention to age appropriate child life issues and pain management techniques. Additionally, adults are occasionally served. Specific instructions appear in the procedure manuals. All Laboratory personnel are required to follow Cook Childrens Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance, as outlined by the OIG and HCFA is an important aspect of our laboratorys environment, and each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of, and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Cook Childrens Compliance Plans. These job functions are performed with a professional, courteous and knowledgeable manner towards physicians, management, nurses, co-workers, and other customers of Cook Children's Healthcare System.
Qualifications:
High School graduate or GED required
Have a minimum of one year phlebotomy experience, pediatric experience preferred
Certification (phlebotomy, medical assistant) preferred
