As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for registering and ordering specimens received from clients into EPIC & SunQuest. You will ensure accurate entry of patient data and test information, generate barcode labels, and manage specimen tracking efficiently. This role requires excellent communication skills to respond to inquiries, resolve identification issues, and handle specimens with care, adhering to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
+ Receive, verify, and enter patient and test information into EPIC & SunQuest according to policy.
+ Generate barcode labels and label specimens accurately.
+ Print outstanding specimen lists and distribute them within the laboratory.
+ File requisitions and maintain a safe working environment.
+ Assist in training other personnel and troubleshoot outpatient requisitions as necessary.
+ Perform other clinical laboratory assistant duties as directed by the lab supervisor.
+ Photocopy requisitions for billing/compliance with ICD-10 coding and assist with billing inquiries.
+ Perform phlebotomy on inpatient and outpatient populations following procedural policies.
+ Monitor workflow using specimen trackers and ensure all tests are obtained in SunQuest.
+ Resolve patient identification problems and communicate issues to care units.
+ Follow standard precautions and wear PPE as indicated in the Safety Manual.
+ Communicate with lead or supervisory personnel regarding any unusual problems.
+ Receive specimens from couriers and verify count against manifests.
+ Handle specimen collection labels, adding, canceling, and combining tests to minimize repeat venipunctures.
+ Operate and troubleshoot pneumatic tube systems for specimen transport.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
+ High school diploma and Phlebotomy certification
+ Ability to perform venipuncture
+ Experience using EPIC and SunQuest systems
+ Dexterity to manipulate instrumentation

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Established patient identification protocols are followed consistently. Inpatients are identified by their wristbands, with no errors. Outpatients, including residents of assisted living facilities, are identified by having patient verbally spell complete name, confirm state and date of birth.
Interprets laboratory orders from clinical provider staff and enters orders into hospital computer systems.
Clinical Collect device is used appropriately in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Outpatient specimens are collected based on the requisition (not label). Compare requisition to Clinical Collect to verify all information. Correctly selects existing patient file from a search list 100% of time.
Quality Assurance review of all orders for accuracy is done before drawing the patient's blood to ensure tests are crossing the interface and not missed.
Duties may include registering patients in the hospital admission and billing systems, verifying insurance coverage, placing physician orders into the order entry system, verifying information for medical coding and billing, and resolving client concerns and inquiries.
May register patients for non-lab departments, such as Diagnostic Imaging (to include X-ray, Ultrasound, Bone Density and Mammogram) and Milford Urgent Care.

Repeat venipuncture attempts are minimized and conducted according to policy.
Checks the collection lists and computer to consolidate requests and verify patient has/has not been recently drawn. Monitors wait list regularly to achieve low patient wait times and help meet patient satisfaction goals. Uses routine scheduled collection times to optimize patient flow.
Recognizes, reports, and seeks appropriate intervention for signs and symptoms of complication or significant change in patient status (e.g., fainting, nausea, etc.).
Provides patient education as needed including instructions for pre-collection preparation, specimen collection, and specimen labeling
Performs administrative and clerical tasks such as registering patients, ordering tests, maintaining patient records in a filing system, filing important records, retrieving data, and sending reports to physicians via phone, mail, fax, or computer.
Operates hospital and laboratory information systems effectively to enter and retrieve patient data.

* Selects the best vein or site available for blood drawing.
* Demonstrates skill with various types of needles and other collection equipment.
* Follows correct "order of draw" for vacutainer tubes.
* Follows procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen.
* Removes the tourniquet according to department policies and procedures.
* Labels all samples in accordance with department policies and procedures.
* Check the collection site prior to leaving the patient.
* Follows all Infection Control guidelines throughout the venipuncture procedure. -Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
* Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation.
* Discards all equipment (sharps, glove, etc.) as required.
* Follow hospital Hand Hygiene policies and procedures between all procedures and patients.
* Demonstrates knowledge of collection criteria: correct vacutainer tubes, volume, stability requirements and/or special handling.
* Effectively teaches and trains all new employees, students, and other additional requests for teaching and training. Provides constructive feedback.
* Assists with new product evaluations and the development of new products upon request. Assists with the implementation of new applications and hardware. Provides constructive feedback.
* Follows all instructions applicable to research protocols.
* Collaborates with principle investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections. Transports specimens appropriately according to protocols.
* Completes phlebotomy sheets, logbooks and other documentations as required, including required documentation during a downtime.
* Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all times.
* Answers all calls/ two way phones in a professional manner. Return the pages within the time required.
* Effectively interacts with supervisor, co-workers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
* Effectively interacts with patients and patient's families.
* Demonstrates a caring and sensitive attitude to all hospital staff, patients and families.
* Works collaboratively as a member of the phlebotomy team at all times. -Follows all policies and procedures related to attendance, absenteeism, tardiness and scheduled breaks.

* Work as a part of the team to provide adequate phlebotomy coverage/including offsites.
* Maintains inventory and stocks supplies.
* Ensures adequate supplies are available for rounds/labs. Notifies team leaders or supervisor when supply levels are low.
* Routinely inspects vacutainer tubes and other supplies for expiration dates and discards as appropriate.
* Responsible for pagers, two-way phones and other hospital devices.
* Adheres to the pager and two-way protocol and is responsible for the communication devices.
* Adheres to the Epic and Collection Manager protocol and is responsible for care of the scanners and printers.
* Responsible to work weekend and holiday hours according to the needs of the department.
* Responsible to be aware of Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and to compile with all BWH hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
* Performs all other duties as required including:
* Performs heel sticks according to policy and procedures.
* Demonstrates knowledge for the administration of glucose solutions for glucose tolerance testing.
* Performs EKG's according to department policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
* High School diploma or equivalent.
* Phlebotomy certification preferred.
* Two years' experience as BWH phlebotomist with performance evaluation score of effective or above.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
* Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
* Knowledge to select appropriate vacutainer tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
* Ability to communicate with patients and families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.
* Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time (90% of the day) and transport supplies and specimens as required.
* Ability to communicate effectively with all phlebotomy team members, clinicians and other hospital staff
* Some computer skills necessary for training on the use of E-mail and hospital applications as required.
* Demonstrate competencies in areas of:
* Venipuncture technique and all blood drawing procedures.
* Appropriate choice of vacutainer tubes and required blood volumes.
* Patient identification and specimen labeling.
* Customer service skills to include ability to communicate with patients and staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
* Extremely busy work environment.
* Potential exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.
* Exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control and laboratory guidelines.
* Required weekend and holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.
