Shift details: Per diem as needed Essential Duties: Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures. Supplying diagnostic notes to physicians, other healthcare professionals, and hospitals. Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures. About the Elliot Lab The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full-service laboratory offering both Clinical and Anatomical Pathology testing. The Clinical Laboratory operates 24 hours/day,7 days/week offering both stat and routine testing. The Anatomical Pathology department operates Monday- Friday 7 am to 4 pm. About the Job The Clinical Lab Assistant I is responsible for the collection, receiving, ordering, labeling, handling, transportation and documentation of patient specimens from a variety of locations. Ensures all specimens are processed through the appropriate laboratory departments through to the final disposition of the specimen into storage. What You'll Do Receives specimens into the laboratory-verifying patient demographics, verifying specimen types, maintaining expected TAT's, maintaining specimen integrity, performing validation of manifests and recognizing problems and discrepancies. Accurately performs computerized clerical duties, verifying and or placing orders, obtaining work lists, and documentation of all collections. Performs follow-up with hospital units and client offices when necessary to resolve problems immediately or forward to the appropriate laboratory department if unable to do so. Performs routine and advanced venipuncture using standard precautions according to department standards in a variety of locations and on all age groups. Performs routine and stat capillary collections in a variety of settings on all age groups. Prepares specimens for processing, labeling specimens, operates centrifuges, aliquot samples, and completes documentation associated with the tests ordered. Performs registration for patient specimens; verifies patient demographic information on the requisition, specimen and within the HIS are accurate and match, updating where appropriate. Facilitates delivery of specimens to the appropriate areas in the laboratory within established timelines. Performs scanning of laboratory requisitions for reference into the patients EMR. Performs add-on test requests and delivers to laboratory departments. Education and Experience Needs High School diploma or equivalent required. Phlebotomy course or phlebotomy experience required.
