Monday-Friday, 0730-1630, with a 1-hour non-working lunch. Lunch breaks may not be taken at the start or end of the duty day and will be coordinated within the respective work center/clinic.
Job Summary
The Phlebotomy Technician will provide professional laboratory and patient support services at Goodfellow Air Force Base. The position involves performing specimen collection, patient in-processing, and laboratory administrative duties in compliance with all applicable clinical and safety standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, patient-focused, and skilled in both clinical procedures and administrative tasks within a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Qualifications
Education / Degree Requirements:
Must have completed an approved college-based phlebotomy certification program.
Must have passed the certification exam from one of the following organizations:
AMT (American Medical Technologists)
ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists)
ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians)
Must provide a minimum of two letters of recommendation from former employers, including at least one from a practicing Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician.
Letters must attest to the candidate's clinical skills and include the author's name, title, phone number, date, address, and signature.
Letters must be dated within the past 5 years.
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 40 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of clinical training, and 100 successful venipunctures (including skin punctures).
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Phlebotomy Technician's duties include, but are not limited to:
Administrative Support:
Answer phones, file charts, schedule laboratory testing appointments, and perform other administrative tasks.
Serve as the laboratory front desk receptionist-greeting patients, answering nontechnical inquiries, and directing technical questions to appropriate staff.
Schedule and provide instructions for 2-hour and 3-hour glucose tolerance tests (GTT).
Maintain statistical records and quality assurance data.
Update demographic and identifying data in the MHS Genesis Laboratory component as directed.
Clinical / Technical Responsibilities:
Perform venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients of all ages and conditions.
Follow proper specimen collection, labeling, and handling procedures.
Conduct glucose and lactose tolerance testing per laboratory standards.
Identify and report discrepancies in medical data and ensure accuracy of records.
Understand and communicate the purpose and procedures of tests to patients as appropriate.
Adhere strictly to infection control guidelines, universal precautions, and laboratory safety protocols.
Dispose of biohazard materials according to regulatory standards.
Training and Quality Assurance:
Assist in training other personnel in proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques.
Participate in staff meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
Review work for accuracy and compliance with laboratory standards.
Attend required training, including MHS Genesis Cerner Laboratory component training.
General Duties:
Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
Stock supplies, disinfect surfaces, and close the phlebotomy area at shift end.
Follow emergency protocols when required.
Promote positive communication and teamwork across departments.
Comply with all CAP (College of American Pathologists) and TJC (The Joint Commission) standards, as well as federal, state, and facility regulations.
Additional Information
Must successfully complete all required MTF training as designated.
Must ensure compliance with the treatment facility's professional bylaws, licensure, and safety standards.

In this role, you will:
Perform a vital part of the patient care process by making sure laboratory specimens are appropriately collected (including phlebotomy), processed, prepared, routed, and stored
Recognize when corrective action is needed and implement effective solutions
Work in a laboratory environment with biological hazards and PPE requirements.
Champion safety, compliance, and quality control

High School Diploma or equivalent
Previous training or experience in specimen collection or processing
Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to telephones, computers, centrifuges, and audible alarms.
