Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
Collects and stores specimens in accordance with established procedures.
Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required.
Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all of the physicians' orders. Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% correctness.
Package specimens for transport.
Stores specimens at the required temperature and places them.
Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or GED is required.
A minimum of 3-5 yr. of phlebotomy experience is required.

This can include but is not limited to registration, order entry, and receipt of all laboratory samples into the LIS system. The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients, as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system and requests patient registration as necessary. Phlebotomists maintain specimen integrity during specimen collection, transport, and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregivers. Provides customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Children's range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Every effort will be made to collect specimens in the least traumatic manner to both child and family, to include attention to age-appropriate child life issues and pain management techniques. Additionally, adults are occasionally served. Specific instructions appear in the procedure manuals. All Laboratory personnel are required to follow Cook Children's Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance, as outlined by the OIG and HCFA is an important aspect of our laboratory's environment, and each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of, and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Cook Children's Compliance Plans. These job functions are performed with a professional, courteous and knowledgeable manner towards physicians, management, nurses, co-workers, and other customers of Cook Children's Healthcare System.
Qualifications:
High School graduate or GED required
Have a minimum of one year phlebotomy experience, pediatric experience preferred
Certification (phlebotomy, medical assistant) preferred

Duties and Responsibilities
Provides a communication link between laboratory staff, patient care providers and outreach clients to facilitate the provision of prompt, accurate, efficient laboratory services.
Prepares patients and aseptically collects specimens utilizing written procedures and with an approach that considers patient age and level of anxiety.
Ensures proper patient identification and accurate specimen labeling according to established procedures.
Maintains patient identity through all phases of specimen processing.
Ensures collection of proper specimens according to established procedures.
Frequently requests and reviews collection pending reports during each shift and resolves all outstanding problems.
Proper collection and handling of specimens for urine drug and COVID-19 screening on hospital employees using appropriate chain of custody guidelines when indicated.
Handles contaminated specimens and material according to infection control guidelines and reports accidents or incidents appropriately.
Assists with stock level maintenance in the processing area.
Dates and distributes laboratory supplies upon arrival.
Handling requests for lab tests to include transcription of physician's orders promptly and accurately according to procedure.
Reviews medication, previous surgeries and other pertinent information that could influence the requested laboratory tests.
Registers patients and orders testing efficiently and accurately for both hospital and reference laboratory patients as needed.
Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as assigned.
