The Phlebotomist III is responsible for providing phlebotomy services in the lab to North End Waterfront Health (NEWH) patients as ordered by treating providers. The individual draws blood via venipuncture or skin puncture on infant, children, teens, adults and elders. Obtains urine samples and collects various samples for culture. Explains safety protocols and procedures to patients. Is responsible for daily quality measures of Point of Care testing and annual POCT competency of colleagues with final oversight by Nurse Manager.
Performs venipuncture and skin puncture on infant, children, teen, adult and elder patients.
Maintains, and updates knowledge of phlebotomy and specimen collection requirements including requisitions, handling and disposal.
Annually participates in hospital/NEWH required safety education, patient privacy education and skill competency verification.
Provides excellent customer service to patients and co-workers.
Checks patient identification against requisition prior to, and at the end of all specimen collection procedures by checking that all information on requisition (s), patient identification tools, and all labels are an exact match.
Locates vein and draws requested bloods following standard phlebotomy techniques; determines need for special equipment for problem veins.
Instructs patients in correct procedure for obtaining urine samples and provides patient with proper collection materials
Ensures adherence to schedules for timed tests such as glucose tolerance and drug levels, and special tests such as STATS, blood culture, and tests required to be obtained in a fasting state including POCT tests
Identifies a wide variety of tests; selects appropriate tubes for tests, according to the size and metric volume; estimates quantity of blood needed in relation to tests ordered; assembles all necessary equipment; obtains tubes according to the established correct order of draw; labels tubes with patient name, unit number, and date initials requisition; prepares samples for storage/transportation.
Performs guaiac on stool cards returned to practice in mail, sends results to patient and ordering provider.
Ensures specimens are ready for transport according to daily schedule.
Logs and records transport activity accurately.
Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures.
Notifies Nurse Manager of unsafe conditions.
Delivers patient reports and assists in printing/collating of patient reports as needed.
Arranges STAT specimen transport to MGH or Quest Diagnostics when needed.
Knows how to respond to emergency in lab such as syncope with venipuncture.
Assists nurse manager with annual waived testing to other Phlebotomists, MAs, LPNs and RNs

Performs phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility
Accessions and receives samples into VA and DoD laboratory information system
Centrifuges samples and pours off into pour off
Instructs patients in proper collection of 24 hour urine and other samples collected
Prepares collection, measures and records 24 hour urine
Transports specimens to the laboratory including those requiring special
Calls up collection lists for inpatient blood draws and look up order numbers and patient information for outpatient
Processes samples to the automated loader of the
Preparing, accessioning, maintaining, filing, and disposing of anatomic pathology specimens and records.
Answers phones and direct calls to other laboratory
Establishes and maintains effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with patients, families, and all other medical center personnel
Provides general clerical and administrative support
Orders, stocks, and maintains specialized supplies used in the drawing
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency, e.g. certification program, ASCP, AMT, AMCA, etc.
American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS)
Minimum of 6 months of experience within the last 3 years as a Patient Service Technician/Phlebotomist
Experience with the Vista Laboratory Information System (LIS) is preferred

Job Summary
Responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing.

Essential Functions
-Obtains quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods for all age groups.
-Ensures accurate patient identification, quality specimen labeling, processing, handling, and transportation of specimens.
-May assist in the recovery of patients experiencing adverse reactions and provide a rapid response to medical emergencies in the inpatient setting.
-Communicates effectively with patients and patient care teams, explaining procedures and addressing patient concerns to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
-Handles sharps and biohazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
-Works fluently with computer programs and systems, and complies with HIPAA regulations.
-Performs other test administration and specimen collection as assigned.

Certificate of completion in phlebotomy or medical Assisting or a phlebotomy course as part of an Associate or Bachelor's degree Program such as nursing. - 1+ year of phlebotomy experience and demonstrated proficiency in the phlebotomy field strongly preferred.

The Elliot Hospital Laboratory is a full-service laboratory offering both Clinical and Anatomical Pathology testing. The Clinical Laboratory operates 24 hours/day,7 days/week offering both stat and routine testing. The Anatomical Pathology department operates Monday- Friday 7 am to 4 pm.

About the Job
The Clinical Lab Assistant I is responsible for the collection, receiving, ordering, labeling, handling, transportation and documentation of patient specimens from a variety of locations. Ensures all specimens are processed through the appropriate laboratory departments through to the final disposition of the specimen into storage.
What You'll Do
Receives specimens into the laboratory-verifying patient demographics, verifying specimen types, maintaining expected TAT's, maintaining specimen integrity, performing validation of manifests and recognizing problems and discrepancies.
Accurately performs computerized clerical duties, verifying and or placing orders, obtaining work lists, and documentation of all collections.
Performs follow-up with hospital units and client offices when necessary to resolve problems immediately or forward to the appropriate laboratory department if unable to do so.
Performs routine and advanced venipuncture using standard precautions according to department standards in a variety of locations and on all age groups.
Performs routine and stat capillary collections in a variety of settings on all age groups.
Prepares specimens for processing, labeling specimens, operates centrifuges, aliquot samples, and completes documentation associated with the tests ordered.
Performs registration for patient specimens; verifies patient demographic information on the requisition, specimen and within the HIS are accurate and match, updating where appropriate.
Facilitates delivery of specimens to the appropriate areas in the laboratory within established timelines.
Performs scanning of laboratory requisitions for reference into the patients EMR.
Performs add-on test requests and delivers to laboratory departments.
Education and Experience Needs
