Performs capillary puncture according to established procedures.
Understands and follows special collection protocols, such as collecting blood cultures, timed specimens, tolerance tests, throat cultures, nasal swabs and breath tests.
Productivity standards are consistently met: An average of 6 to 8 minutes for one inpatient; 5-7 minutes for each outpatient.
Handles collected specimens to ensure they are delivered for optimum laboratory processing. Uses pneumatic tube appropriately. STAT specimens sent to lab immediately
Repeat venipuncture attempts are minimized and conducted according to policy.
Checks the collection lists and computer to consolidate requests and verify patient has/has not been recently drawn. Monitors wait list regularly to achieve low patient wait times and help meet patient satisfaction goals. Uses routine scheduled collection times to optimize patient flow.
Recognizes, reports, and seeks appropriate intervention for signs and symptoms of complication or significant change in patient status (e.g., fainting, nausea, etc.).
Provides patient education as needed including instructions for pre-collection preparation, specimen collection, and specimen labeling
Performs administrative and clerical tasks such as registering patients, ordering tests, maintaining patient records in a filing system, filing important records, retrieving data, and sending reports to physicians via phone, mail, fax, or computer.
Operates hospital and laboratory information systems effectively to enter and retrieve patient data.
Performs basic patient reception and specimen processing duties to include registration, ordering of tests, test add-ons, centrifuging, poring off specimens (aliquoting), and preserving specimen appropriately.
Registers patients accurately in the hospital information system by obtaining and verifying all required demographic and insurance information.
Orders laboratory tests in HIS and LIS with utmost accuracy. Able to make corrections when errors occur.
Identifies and effectively resolves specimen collection problems. Rejects improperly collected samples when appropriate.
Documents follow-up for patient recalls. Ensures patient consent has been obtained, Medicare Secondary Payor questionnaires and Advanced Beneficiary Notices are completed as necessary.
Performs phlebotomies at sites remote from the main hospital, including clinic collection stations, physician offices, nursing homes, business clients and health fairs.
Assists in training new phlebotomists, students, and clinic office staff as needed. Acts as a resource in obtaining difficult venipunctures and answering technical phlebotomy questions.

Job Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Performs blood draws and vital signs in adult patients (aged 18 years and older) enrolled in a research study who require home visits postoperatively.
Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates the skills and competence to process/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick.
Validates a positive identification of patient according to department policy.
Confirms accuracy of labels and requisitions before beginning procedure.
Develops a relationship with the patient to be comforting and to demonstrate confidence for the potential venipuncture/stick.
2. Demonstrates the skills and competence to accurately complete laboratory requisitions or electronic orders.
Completes the laboratory requisition to include all necessary information; to include the legible documentation of his/her phlebotomy code, research billing information, and collection date and time or properly completes electronic order.
Follows all requirements for sample processing per study protocol.
3. Demonstrates the skills and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture/stick.
Selects the best area available for blood drawing.
Checks the wound site before leaving the patient.
4. Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure.
At all times wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation.
Discards all equipment (sharps, glove, etc.) as required.
Handwashing between patients.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of correct tube to use for test requested, amount of blood to be drawn, the appropriate procedures for specimen handling to maintain integrity for test requested.
6. Follows all directions as they are applicable to study protocols.
Cooperates with principle investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections.
7. Completes phlebotomy check sheets and/or logbooks as required.
8. Demonstrates professional customer service skills whenever interacting with a customer.
Answers the telephone with location, name and greeting.
Effectively interacts with co-workers and clinical staff to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
Effectively interacts with patients and patient's families to avoid stress and anxiety.
Demonstrates a caring sensitive attitude to all patients and families.
9. At all times works collaboratively as a member of the laboratory team.
Follows all policies and procedures related to absenteeism, tardiness, lunch breaks and all other break time.
Works to provide adequate phlebotomy coverage for study protocols.
10. Performs all other duties as asked and/or directed, as applicable, i.e.,
Performs vital sign assessment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Phlebotomy certification required.
3. Certified in obtaining vital signs
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1. Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
2. Basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins.
3. Knowledge to select appropriate tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
4. Ability to communicate with patients, patients' families, and extended families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.
5. Obtain vital signs.
6. Validate competencies in areas of:
Venipuncture technique and all blood drawing procedures.
Appropriate choice of test tube and required blood volumes.
Specimen labeling and patient identification.
Customer service skills to include ability to communicate with patients and staff.

Required Qualifications:

* Phlebotomy certification or completed training program from an accredited agency or previous experience as a phlebotomist is required
* Able to pass a standardized color blindness test.

* In-Patient phlebotomy experience
* 6+ months of phlebotomy experience
