Job Description The Mental Health Technician (MHT)/Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood samples from patients, while also utilizing specialized skills to calmly interact with individuals who may be experiencing anxiety or distress related to the blood draw process, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. When not performing phlebotomist duties, observes and assists assigned mental health patients or substance abuse patients and helps with admission activities. MHTs are responsible for the overall maintenance of a safe environment in either Adult or Adolescent Admissions and to ensure safety of patients and staff. MHTs participate in the activities outlined below and carrying out general nursing assistance necessary to assess adolescent, adult, or older adult patients admitting to the hospital. Shift details: Per diem as needed Essential Duties: Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures. Supplying diagnostic notes to physicians, other healthcare professionals, and hospitals. Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures. Analyzing blood specimens using the correct testing equipment, when necessary. Cleaning, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory equipment used in the drawing and testing of blood specimens. Ordering laboratory supplies, as needed. Conduct Q15s and 1:1 in accordance with hospital standards. Ask for assistance when other tasks take priority. Ensure there are no gaps in observations. Take direction from RN or LVN. Float to any unit as needed. Do not push back. Maintain boundaries with patients and employees. Observe patient for change in behavior. Work on de-escalation prior to a code. Notify RN to evaluate and assess changes in patient behavior. Respond to all codes (If you are making rounds or on a 1:1 ensure someone has signed the Q15s before departing. If you are the only one available for observations, continue to make your observations). Assist patients with good hygiene. Help maintain unit cleanliness. Know the daily schedule and keep patients on track for all events. Speak to patients respectfully, recognize that how you speak may escalate to a code. Use appropriate phone etiquette for quality calls and address all customer questions and concerns. Conduct soft safety search of patient. Wand, check shoes, pockets, etc. Inform RN if contraband is found. Assist the RN in taking vital signs if enough MHTs are available to meet Q15 and 1:1 requirement. Properly retrieves electronic orders from Sunquest, Collection manager and Epic as necessary. * Follows procedures for obtaining "standing order" information according to department policy. * Includes all requirements in formation for the Blood Bank samples (initials, date, patient name and medical record number on all tubes and requisitions). * Follows department policies related to the collection of "discharge/transfer", STAT and timed collections. 3. Demonstrates the skill and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture and heelstick procedures: * Selects the best vein or site available for blood drawing. * Demonstrates skill with various types of needles and other collection equipment. * Follows correct "order of draw" for vacutainer tubes. * Follows procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen. * Removes the tourniquet according to department policies and procedures. * Labels all samples in accordance with department policies and procedures. * Check the collection site prior to leaving the patient. 4. Follows all Infection Control guidelines throughout the venipuncture procedure. * Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required. * Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation. * Discards all equipment (sharps, glove, etc.) as required. * Follow hospital Hand Hygiene policies and procedures between all procedures and patients. 5. Demonstrates knowledge of collection criteria: correct vacutainer tubes, volume, stability requirements and/or special handling. 6. Effectively teaches and trains all new employees, students, and other additional requests for teaching and training. Provides constructive feedback. 7. As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for registering and ordering specimens received from clients into EPIC & SunQuest. You will ensure accurate entry of patient data and test information, generate barcode labels, and manage specimen tracking efficiently. This role requires excellent communication skills to respond to inquiries, resolve identification issues, and handle specimens with care, adhering to safety protocols. Responsibilities + Receive, verify, and enter patient and test information into EPIC & SunQuest according to policy. + Generate barcode labels and label specimens accurately. + Print outstanding specimen lists and distribute them within the laboratory. + File requisitions and maintain a safe working environment. + Assist in training other personnel and troubleshoot outpatient requisitions as necessary. + Perform other clinical laboratory assistant duties as directed by the lab supervisor. + Photocopy requisitions for billing/compliance with ICD-10 coding and assist with billing inquiries. + Perform phlebotomy on inpatient and outpatient populations following procedural policies. + Monitor workflow using specimen trackers and ensure all tests are obtained in SunQuest. + Resolve patient identification problems and communicate issues to care units. + Follow standard precautions and wear PPE as indicated in the Safety Manual. + Communicate with lead or supervisory personnel regarding any unusual problems. + Receive specimens from couriers and verify count against manifests. + Handle specimen collection labels, adding, canceling, and combining tests to minimize repeat venipunctures. + Operate and troubleshoot pneumatic tube systems for specimen transport. + Other duties as assigned.
