Follows universal precautions, and infection prevention and control guidelines in the performance of all procedures, wears task appropriate PPE, disposes of needles and contaminated waste, and patient isolation requirements in the performance of all procedures.
Follows proper procedures in the storage and disposal of needles and syringes.
Assists in disinfecting and closing the Phlebotomy Room at the end of the shift
Receives specimens and accompanying requests forms for any of the tests that can be performed and checks each for proper identification.
Accessions order by use of computer system
Clearly labels specimens after drawing with patient's name, identification number (SSN), phlebotomist's initials, collection time, and date as required.
File results of completed laboratory tests.
Clearly communicates the daily status and problems about the laboratory output to team member and senior management of the service.
Verifies patient identified by confirming two (2) patient identifiers per VA policy (patient's name, date of birth, and/or social security number) prior to accepting or collecting specimens for processing or testing performing. Differences in patient identification and will be reconciled and corrected before drawing blood or accepting patient samples.
May serve as receptionist at the laboratory front desk greeting and processing patient lab orders, providing patients with appropriate guidance, answering non-technical questions, and referring technical inquiries to appropriate laboratory staff member.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers
Must possess good organizational skills to assure timely collection and processing of samples, inventory control skills, and ability to perform multiple laboratory tasks at the same time.
Familiarity with laboratory and VA regulations and policies such as Laboratory Guide or Safety Manual is desired.

Phlebotomist Leader, under the direction of the area supervisor, ensure that daily work of the Patient Service Centers (PSCs) and In-office Phlebotomy (IOPs) are completed accurately and on time. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ready to travel to a client location within a designated region with short notice.

Function as back up for the Phlebotomist Supervisor as necessary and carry out duties in his/her absence.

Collects specimens according to established procedures. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during and after the collection process.
Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
Completes requisitions accurately.
Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer. Requires attention to detail to maintain high level of accuracy. Communicate with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify test(s) ordered, obtain accurate billing information, i.e. diagnosis codes, UPIN information, etc.
Researches test/client information utilizing lab computer system.
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Package specimens for transport. Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen. Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens.
Maintains required records and documentation.
Prepares schedules with minimal overtime for employees and floaters to be submitted to the supervisor for approval.
Assist with time/attendance entry of employees.
Maintains daily records and all appropriate PSC/IOP Phlebotomy logs.
Assist with compilation of monthly statistics and data.
Performs basic clerical duties, i.e. filing, faxing, and preparing mail. The person in this position is required to perform electronic data entry.
Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period. Submits accurate expense and travel logs Monday for the week prior or as directed by management.

The Phlebotomist supports high-quality, Veteran-centered care by performing specimen collection and processing for a VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. Responsibilities include venipuncture and capillary collections, specimen handling/processing, courier preparation, point-of-care testing (as authorized), and accurate documentation in the electronic systems. The role emphasizes patient identification, safety, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, and excellent Veteran experience.
Verify patient identity using two identifiers; obtain informed consent/assent per policy and explain procedures to Veterans in a trauma-informed manner.
Perform venipuncture and capillary collections for adults, including special collections (e.g., timed, fasting, cold-protected) per requisition.
Select appropriate tubes/containers; follow order-of-draw to minimize hemolysis and cross-contamination.
Label specimens at bedside/point of collection with required identifiers; ensure complete, legible requisitions and orders.
Centrifuge, aliquot, and store specimens under proper conditions (temperature, light protection, stability) per test requirements.
Prepare specimens for transport (pack-out) following chain-of-custody, biohazard, and packaging requirements; coordinate courier pick-up and tracking.

In this role, you will:
* Provide exceptional patient care and customer-focused service.
* Perform venipuncture on patients of all ages.
* Collect/prepare non-blood specimens.
* Ensure proper specimen processing, labeling, and test ordering.
* Champion safety, compliance, and quality control.
All you need is:
* High School Diploma or equivalent
* Previous phlebotomy training or experience
* Excellent communication skills
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
* Basic computer and data entry skills
Bonus points if you've got:
* 2+ years of laboratory training or experience in specimen collection and processing
* Certification from the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians
