Outpatient Draw Station With excellent customer service skills, the phlebotomist collects blood and urine. When needed, the phlebotomist also performs point-of-care laboratory tests. What you will Do: * Following established standard work practices and using established safety precautions, collects blood specimens utilizing the appropriate venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, heelstick or port draw techniques with patients of all age groups including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics and assists nursing colleagues with line draws. * Can accurately collect and label blood culture specimens. * Collects chain-of-custody urines for drugs of abuse testing and blood for legal alcohol collections, performs rapid drug kit testing, routine therapeutic phlebotomies, point of care testing, breath testing, completes annual competencies, and administers appropriate glucose solution for gestational glucose and glucose tolerance testing. * Accurately identifies patients prior to collection of specimens using two patient identifiers, and then accurately labels the specimens in the presence of the patient as established by laboratory policy. * Maintains the inventory of supplies for all draw locations, trays and carts. Phlebotomy carts are stocked to established levels at the end of each shift. * Be able to consult with the technical colleagues whenever workload exceeds the capacity of the phlebotomy team, complications or difficulty arises in collection of a specimen from a patient. Completes send-out process for specimens referred to outside reference laboratories, retrieves specimens from storage for add-on testing or other needs, and aliquots specimens for in-house and send-out tests. Cross-trained to cover areas of client services and phlebotomy. * Prepares specimens to be sent to reference laboratories, places orders electronically or completes the proper test requisition, and maintains record of all specimens sent to outside laboratories. * Completes batch list and packages Mayo reference lab specimens daily. * Manages problems related to reference lab specimens including but not limited to taking calls from the reference lab related to specimen acceptability and contacting clients for additional information. * Assists phlebotomy staff with specimen collections, as needed, following standard work practices including use of the phlebotomy cart and ability to ride in an elevator. * Accurately identifies patients prior to collection of specimens using two patient identifiers as established by hospital/laboratory policy. After collection and in the presence of the patient, accurately labels specimens following established hospital/laboratory policy. * Follows and understands downtime procedures when any or all of the computer systems are down that affect laboratory orders. * Operates computer equipment and software programs relative to performance of essential job functions and other laboratory related requirements. * Serves as a steward for the hospital's human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of the unit/department. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies in lab section, including kits required for tests referred to outside laboratories. * Retrieves specimens from storage for additional testing following standard work processes for the specimen retrieval system. * Performs all duties and responsibilities as outlined in CLIA regulations. * Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. * Communicates with and performs duties following MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center Guiding Behaviors. * Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. * Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy. * Performs other responsibilities as requested by manager or department head. * Cross-trained to cover client services functions and phlebotomy. * Cross-trained to cover on-campus lab courier specimen pick-ups and delivery of supplies following established courier run and standard work practices. Schedule: Part Time Evenings Education: * High School education is required. * Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or Higher degree, ie AA, BS, BA in the medical field is preferred. Educational transcript required for verification. Experience * Previous office laboratories, phlebotomy, or processing experience is preferred.
