Summary:
The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a Physical Therapist to help implement treatment plans that improve patients' mobility, reduce pain, and enhance functional independence. PTAs provide hands-on assistance with therapeutic exercises, modalities, and activities of daily living across various clinical settings. They document patient progress, educate patients on home exercise programs, and collaborate with the healthcare team to support optimal recovery and overall quality of life.
Essential Work Functions:
Set up therapy equipment and treatment areas, ensuring all devices and supplies are calibrated, clean, and ready for patient sessions
Guide patients through prescribed exercises and activities to improve mobility, strength, and balance, while providing hands-on assistance with movements and transfers as needed
Observe patient performance during therapy sessions, note changes in functional abilities, and report progress or concerns to the supervising Physical Therapist
Accurately record patient treatment details, progress, and any adjustments made during therapy sessions in the medical record
Instruct patients and their caregivers on home exercise programs, proper use of assistive devices, and techniques for safe mobility and injury prevention
Work in conjunction with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate a comprehensive approach to patient care
Maintain a safe treatment environment by adhering to infection control protocols, safety guidelines, and regulatory standards while addressing patients' comfort needs during therapy sessions
Engage in quality assurance initiatives and professional development activities to remain current with best practices in physical therapy
Collaborate in discharge planning to ensure smooth transitions and continued patient progress in community or home-based settings
Performs other duties as assigned within scope of practice
Required Essential Skills:
Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills
The ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language
Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills
Physical Abilities - Must be able to remain in a stationary position, move about, move equipment (50-100lbs), push, pull, and bend
Interpersonal Skills - Must be able to work effectively with a variety of personnel (professional and ancillary) to present a positive attitude and professionalism
Technical/Motor Skills - Must have the ability to grasp, perform fine manipulation, push/pull, and move about when assisting with procedures and/or using department equipment
Mental Requirements - Must be able to cope with frequent contact with the general public and customers while meeting deadlines under pressure. Must be able to work under close supervision occasionally, as well as working without assistance from other personnel. Abil-OT Kids Therapy is in search of a qualified, state-licensed occupational therapy assistant to treat a variety of diagnoses in the pediatric population. We are seeking a conscientious professional with at least one year of experience to join our team. The ideal candidate is a compassionate therapist devoted to patient advocacy, communicates with other members of the team effectively and respectfully, is professional and passionate about the role in helping children and families reach their goals. We are looking for someone who is eager to work with children in our clinic and within the community, experienced in providing occupational therapy and/feeding services, and interested in learning new and innovative treatment methods to enhance their clinical skills. The right candidate is flexible, passionate, empathetic, and encouraging, helping to inspire children and their families to achieve the optimum level of independence.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT:
Implement a treatment plan under the supervision of a licensed OTR for each patient that is client-centered including caregiver training.
Provide quality therapeutic interventions in the clinic and community to adequately
support the treatment plan to facilitate functional outcomes and goal attainment.
Participate in effective interdisciplinary communication to maximize client outcomes.
Adequately document treatment interventions, patient progression, and discharge of skilled services in collaboration with the OTR according to approved medical and company documentation procedures.
Practice adequate safety awareness and clinical judgment to keep patients and
therapists safe during treatments.
Communicate compassionately, effectively, and productively with clients, caseworkers, and families for appropriate scheduling of evaluations, treatments, and ongoing care.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT:
Associates of Occupational Therapy Assistant degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program per NBCOT standards.
Active North Carolina Occupational Therapy Assistant license.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with AED.
1+ years experience working as an occupational therapy assistant (preferred)
Experience with recommending assistive equipment/devices and facilitation of ordering equipment.
Knowledge of Physical and Speech Therapy with an understanding of how their services can benefit patients.
