We are seeking a skilled and experienced Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant to join one of the premier cardiovascular surgery programs in Texas.
This role is ideal for a PA who thrives in the operating room, values teamwork, and wants to work in a collaborative environment where surgeon partners empower PAs with high autonomy.
About the Role
This position is heavily surgery focused.
Approximately 80 percent of your time is spent in the operating room
Three suite CVOR including one hybrid room
Rounding in the CVICU
Join a team of five experienced PAs as we hire our sixth
Highly collaborative surgeons who allow PAs to perform many procedures independently
Patients travel from across Texas and the southwest for complex cardiac surgery
Schedule
4 10 hour shifts
One weekend every six weekends
Weekend rounding is usually one to two hours per day depending on patient volume and how much time you prefer to spend with your patients. After that, you are free to go home.
The week after you work your weekend, you choose your day off including the option to take Friday for a three day weekend
Team oriented approach with intentional spacing of long surgical days and shorter days when possible
Strong culture of relieving each other when needed
Procedures and Cases You Will See
You will participate in the full spectrum of advanced cardiac surgery cases including:
CABG
Valve repair and replacement
TAVR and TMVR
Aortic aneurysm repair
Aortic dissection repair
Thoracic and thoracoabdominal procedures
EP procedure
Ventricular assist device placement
ECMO cannulation and management
Heart transplant
Lung transplant
Reoperative cardiac procedures
Conduit harvest including endoscopic vein harvest
Chest tube placement
Central line placement
Arterial line placement
Insertion and removal of temporary pacing wires
ICU procedures
First assisting on all major cases

Join two existing APPs in Foregut Surgery at UT Health Austin. This role combines direct patient care in OR, clinic and inpatient settings with a focus on collaborative, evidence-based management of patient with diseases of the foregut (GERD/Hiatal Hernias).
Responsibilities:
Provide care for patients with foregut surgical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, paraoesophageal hernia, and other esophageal and upper gastrointestinal disorders. Care settings will be OR, clinic, and inpatient
First assist in OR
Collaborate with attending surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team to ensure accurate diagnosis, appropriate surgical and non-surgical management, and continuity of care.
Conduct preoperative and postoperative patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical exams, test interpretation, and patient counseling.
Independently manage follow-up visits, review diagnostic studies, and adjust care plans in consultation with supervising physicians.
Educate patients on surgical procedures, recovery expectations, dietary modifications, and long-term disease management.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, contribute to clinical protocols, and develop patient education materials relevant to foregut surgery.
Document care in the electronic medical, coordinate preoperative clearances, and manage surgical scheduling requirements.
Support education of medical students, residents, and fellows through clinical teaching and case review.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

The PA Emergency Medicine is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider who actively renders direct patient care and possesses delegated prescriptive authority, is credentialed and privileged, and whose service is billed as an independent billing provider, as recognized by Medicare and Medicaid within the healthcare systems, and in accordance with the appropriate board. The Advanced Practice Provider provides medical care based upon the scope of practice as delineated by the supervising physician. Emergency Medicine providers typically work in the Emergency Department and provide patient care during assigned shifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Assesses the physical and mental condition of patients by performing and obtaining comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories.
Orders, collects, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
Prescribes, recommends and/or employs medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatments and procedures or performs indicated procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policies with attention to efficacy, safety, and cost. Recommends interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
Formulates and implements comprehensive outcomes-based patient treatment plans based on patient assessments, evidence-based medicine, standards of care, professional practice guidelines and in collaboration with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members when appropriate. Evaluates patient?s response to health care provided and the effectiveness of care.
Counsels patients and families regarding medical processes, management of the health illness/condition, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over the counter medications and herbal remedies.
Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient?s treatment plans and outcomes. Initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice and/or expertise.
Provides consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the Provider?s specialty and training.
Performs invasive procedures specific to scope of practice and competency of the provider as delegated by supervising Physician.

Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of and in collaboration with CPIhealth physicians, diagnose symptoms and implement treatment plans to reduce pain and restore function.
Perform medical histories, examine, and treat patients as part of a healthcare team.
Ensure safe and compliant clinical and surgical procedures are provided to patients utilizing the following:
Evaluation - elicit a detailed and accurate history; perform an appropriate physical examination; order, perform, and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies; define problems; develop management plans; and record and present data.
Monitoring - implement patient management plans, record progress notes, and participate in the provision of the continuity of care.
Patient Education - counsel and educate patients regarding issues of health care management, to include compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, interventional procedures, and ancillary services (i.e. physical therapy, bracing, TENS).
See new patients, as needed, accurately complete H&P, HPI, vitals, preliminary diagnosis and POC.
Follow up with existing patients in a timely manner to discuss improvements from a psychological, social, interventional, and opioid perspective.
Perform hospital consults on CPIhealth patients as requested by CPIhealth physician and per call schedule.
Provide appropriate professional referrals to physicians, therapists, and imaging.
Follow safe clinical procedures and make correct non-compliance issues in a timely and professional manner.
Document patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
Confer with physician on assessment, diagnosis, and plan of treatment.
Ensure timely follow up with patient care by making sure support staff are aware of the Plan of Treatment.
Maintain contact with referring and primary Physicians.
Participate in marketing activities.
Attend regularly scheduled company and peer meetings
Provide coverage and support to facilities not regularly scheduled.
Maintain professional credentials and take a leadership role in peer education.
Staff and peer training and motivation.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission, values, and strategies of CPIhealth.
