Collaborates with physician or other health care team members regarding patients? health needs, outcomes and effectiveness of care plan.
May first assist the surgeon with cases on a determined basis.
Assists with discharge planning.
Initiates appropriate contact with other health care providers as required.

Texas Children's Hospital is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, comprised of 170 intensive care beds spread across four campuses and is the affiliated hospital of Baylor College of Medicine. The primary clinical site for this position is at Texas Children's Hospital, Medical Center Campus in Houston. The Division of Critical Care Medicine, in the Department of Pediatrics, is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of attending critical care physicians, advanced practice providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants), postdoctoral fellows, and research support personnel committed to the care of patients suffering from a life-threatening illness or injury.
The Medical Center PICU is in the state-of-the-art Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower. The 92-bed unit includes a Surgical ICU, Neurological ICU, Pulmonary ICU, Hematology/Oncology ICU, and Transitional ICU (TICU). The instructor will work alongside Faculty colleagues, critical care physician fellows, advanced practice providers, consultants and pediatric residents in the care of children with chronic and acute illness requiring intensive care in the PICU and TICU.
Job Purpose
Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.
Job Duties
Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic studies in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.

Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.
2. Assesses patient's medical complaints and provides appropriate treatment.
3. Performs minor surgical procedures as delegated by the supervising physician.
4. Manages pre-operative and post-operative patients in coordination with the faculty supervising physician.
5. Utilizes advanced assessment skills to anticipate complex patient problems specific to surgery while communicating information to supervising / attending physician.
6. Assists in collecting patient histories.
7. Performs physical examinations and provides episodic care or problem oriented care under the supervision of a physician.
8. Orders appropriate laboratory tests and interprets the laboratory data such as blood and urine samples.
9. Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical/surgical information.
10. Provides guidance and instruction to patients on preventive health care or postsurgical care.
11. Assists physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions.
12. Enters chart documentation for review and counter signature by the physician.
13. Prepares and cares for supplies and equipment.

Certification/Skills:
Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant
Current Physician Assistant certification issued by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants
Basic Life Support (BLS) certified or specialty required by department
Proficient in the use of medical and surgical instruments and equipment required by work.
Minimum Education:
Master's degree as Physician Assistant. Bachelor's degree as Physician Assistant with at least two years of professional experience in the role is acceptable based on terminal degree requirements at the time of graduation.

Provide medical care within the PA scope of practice in collaboration with the staff physician to critical care patients. This includes but is not limited to history and physicals, invasive procedures, progress nots, and imaging and laboratory result evaluation.
Function as a communication liaison between patient/family, consultants, and multi professional teammates.
Maintain an above-board relationship with all office staff
Position Qualifications: A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Have a current Texas Physician Assistant license. Be certified through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges. Preferred Qualifications: 1 years as a PA in the operating room, surgery is preferred, but willing to train a new grad.
