Working as a Physician

While it may take a lot of schooling, becoming a physician eventually pays off. We mean that literally. The median wage is $208,000 a year. But back to that schooling.

Generally, you'll only need a Bachelor's degree. But depending on your specialty, you'll also need 3-7 years in internship and residency programs. That salary makes it all seem worth it, though, doesn't it?

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a physician. For example, did you know that they make an average of $84.7 an hour? That's $176,175 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 7% and produce 55,400 job opportunities across the U.S.

What Does a Physician Do

There are certain skills that many physicians have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed communication skills, compassion and detail oriented.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a physician, we found that a lot of resumes listed 14.6% of physicians included patient care, while 14.4% of resumes included health care, and 11.5% of resumes included internal medicine. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

When it comes to searching for a job, many search for a key term or phrase. Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the physician job title. But what industry to start with? Most physicians actually find jobs in the health care and non profits industries.

How To Become a Physician

Other degrees that we often see on physician resumes include master's degree degrees or associate degree degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a physician. In fact, many physician jobs require experience in a role such as internship. Meanwhile, many physicians also have previous career experience in roles such as medical director or physician assistant.
