Duties include but are not limited to:
* Clinical practice, supervising and teaching Cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students.
* Responsible for providing consultation on various forms of cardiovascular disease states, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
* Performing and interpreting non-invasive cardiac studies such as stress tests, ambulatory ECG monitoring, and cardiac imaging tests such as nuclear study, echocardiogram, Cardiac CT, and Cardiac MRI.
* Will be expected to share attending call responsibilities with the other cardiologists in covering some night, weekend, and holiday calls as needed. The incumbent will round with the team of residents and fellows on such occasions and perform emergency procedures on patients in the Intensive Care Unit or when required the Emergency Department or Operating Room.
* Be required to give didactic lectures to Cardiology fellows and participate in academic activities such as journal reviews, Grand rounds, conferences, and lectures.
* Responsible for recognizing patients appropriate for referral and conferring with the Section Chief.
* Expected to be proficient in non-invasive imaging modalities including advanced echocardiogram skills, Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI.
* Provide comprehensive patient care in the form of non-invasive, consultative, and inpatient/outpatient cardiology care. Moderate Sedation Privileges and certification required. Fluoroscopy privileges are not required. Central venous line insertion and management. Intra-arterial line insertion and management. Interpret EKGs. Interpret Holter monitors. Cardioversion, Stress test interpretation, tilt testing, non-invasive ICD stimulation, pacemakers/ICD evaluation, and programming as needed.
* Major responsibility of the incumbent is that of a Non-invasive/General Cardiologist. The incumbent in conjunction with other Cardiologists will help build a robust Cardiology practice with a focus on Non-Invasive Cardiac Testing/Imaging, Heart failure, and Preventive Cardiology.
* Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
* Demonstrates infection control practices for disease prevention (i.e. hand washing, universal precautions/isolation procedures, including TB requirement/precautions).
* Support of VA's teaching mission, the incumbent will provide supervisory oversight of fellows, residents, and medical students. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. * Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
* Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

* Systematically assesses the urgent or emergent health needs of patients, analyzes data, and formulates a plan of care, with other members of the medical team, which is realistic in relation to the employee's capabilities and job requirements.
* Recognizes and treats illnesses and injuries according to established operating instructions within the scope of licensure and regulations of state employment or practice.
* Diagnose the patient's ailment and immediately start treatment.
* Explain to the patient and their family about their ailment and educate them about the line of treatment they are starting.
* Order diagnostic tests on the patient as required.
* Prescribe pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented medical conditions.
* Discuss potential side effects of medication/treatment with patients and ensure that all allergy information is up to date before prescribing medication/treatment
* Document treatment orders for each patient and ensure that the nurses follow those orders.
* Performs record-keeping functions in accordance with program policies and position.
* Maintains functional proficiency and ease of use utilizing electronic health records as required by, and appropriate to, position.
* Maintains patient confidentiality, and confidentiality of medical records, in compliance with the Privacy Act and HIPAA regulations in all work activities.
* Records and maintains patient information in accordance with standard protocols, and the Privacy Act.
* Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with contract requirements.
Qualifications:
* Graduate from an accredited medical school in which an MD or DO degree was earned.
* 3 years of post-qualification experience as a Physician in an emergency room or critical care setting.
* Hold and maintain a Virginia license as a physician and be favorably credentialed.
* Advanced Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
* Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.
* Must be able to perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment.
* Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities.
* Willingness to travel in the U.S. as needed.
Physical Requirements:
* The position will require walking, standing, or sitting for periods of up to or beyond 10 to 12 hours each day
* Under urgent or emergency situations, the incumbent may need to run, sprint, or run up or down stairs
* Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
* May require bending, stooping, and lifting as required for patient care and transport.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The new physician will work as a lead in a team-based care environment, working in a 100% outpatient and clinic-based capacity. This value-based model focuses on quality of care for patients, with teams consisting of:
- physicians
- advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners / physician assistants)
- pharmacists
- care coaches
- nurses
- medical assistants
- behavioral health providers
- referral coordinators
- and more
This model allows physicians to see fewer patients per day and spend more time in visits, with a “quality over quantity” approach.
New patient visits are typically scheduled for 60 minutes and established patient follow-ups for 40 to 45 minutes. Most providers see 10 to 12 patients per day.
Specific duties of the role include, but are not limited to:
- provide assessment, planning, primary care, and continuous medical coverage
- provide direction and support to nurse practitioners and members of the care team
- collaborate on care planning decisions
- assist in coordinating care delivery
The organization uses the eClinicalWorks EHR and provides ongoing peer-to-peer collaboration and long-term career cultivation.
