Job Description
The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care and clinical support within an outpatient clinic. Responsibilities include obtaining vital signs, reconciling medications, collecting patient history, and facilitating patient flow.
Additional duties involve managing the electronic health record (EPIC), scheduling appointments, processing medication requests, handling prior authorizations, and coordinating tests and procedures.
Upon successful completion of clinical competency, the role may also require performing EKGs, lab tests, injections, and/or phlebotomy. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to ensure efficient patient care and support for providers.
Qualifications:
A minimum of one year of experience in a medical office, clinic, or similar setting is required. This experience must include direct, hands-on patient care in a clinical setting, such as obtaining manual vital signs, documenting patient history and medications, and performing clinical procedures (e.g., EKGs, phlebotomy, administering injections or vaccines). A combination of relevant experience and formal medical-related education may be considered to meet this requirement.
Upon hire, all Medical Assistants will undergo a clinical competency assessment and must successfully complete MA orientation. Those who do not meet the required standards will be enrolled in the Medical Assistant (MA) Trainee Program for further development and reevaluation.
Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Requirements for Certified Medical Assistant:
Current MA Certification from AAMA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, AAMP.
Or graduate of an accredited LPN or RN program with current Licensure without restrictions.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT: Provides performance improvement activities that improve patient health while increasing quality of services and care provided. Responsibilities include: seeing that patient screenings are up-to-date, cooperating in setting and implementing improvement priorities, assuring that all scheduled referrals and outside testing is completed and properly followed up-on, responding timely to patient messages and request, and addressing infection control issues.
CLERICAL FUNCTIONS: Understands and fully utilizes electronic medical records, assist provider in fully utilizing medical records, assures that records properly reflect services provided to patient, accurately and appropriately charting personal patient care encounters, sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, demographics, etc.; maintaining equipment/sterilization, as needed; appropriate handling of laboratory specimen, maintaining required laboratory quality control and sample medicine logs, ordering and maintaining medical and office supplies, and appropriately handling biohazard waste disposal and monitoring.

Mission of Department: The Ohio County Hospital Nursing Department exists to provide quality nursing services to the patients/customers of Ohio County Hospital Corp., holistically and addressing physical, educational, mental, emotional, cultural, social and spiritual needs, by utilizing the nursing process.
Purpose of Job: Performs designated tasks for patients in all age groups in clinic setting. May perform basic monitoring to include temperature, pulse, respiration, B/P. Tasks are performed in accordance to hospital and nursing policies and procedures as well as legal compliance policies. Must have good communication skills and support team work in the delivery of patient care as well as demonstrate customer relations consistent with the hospital's purpose, vision, and values.
Experience/Education: Certification required. Keyboarding and basic computer skills preferred. Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions effectively. Emotional stability. Knowledgeable of health care field, medical office protocols/procedures, medical terminology.
OCH prefers that Non-Certified Clinical Assistants (those holding a SRNA certification or nothing) obtain a CCMA certification within 6 months of hire if they hold 1 year of clinical experience or within 1 year of employment with no clinical experience.
Working Environment: Usual working space is well ventilated area and exam rooms. Requires standing, walking, turning, bending, stooping, and lifting patients. Direct patient care which requires both fine and gross motor skills. Also subject to exposure to bloodborne pathogens at all times in patient care. May have occasional exposure to radiation during radiology procedures and to dangerous chemicals (cleaning and disinfecting agents, rarely chemotherapeutic agents). Environment may be stressful at times, therefore ability to work under stressful conditions is necessary.

Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.
Performs all procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures of OCH and adheres to legal compliance policies and other regulatory issues
Performance Criteria:
Demonstrates age appropriate skills in completing assigned patient activities.
Transports patients in a safe and timely fashion.
Collects specimens as assigned using correct policy and procedure for collection, labeling, and transporting specimens to the lab.
Observed and record vital signs accurately and in a timely manner as assigned. Obtains weight and height on patients as assigned and/or according to policy.
Cleans and prepares exam rooms following each patient and all medical histories.
Accurately and promptly reports changes in patients' condition to the provider.
Understands and utilizes EMR.
Demonstrates competency in performing or assisting in assigned procedures within scope. Accurately obtains patient history/information.
May perform simple lab and screening tests with competency.
Provides for patient privacy during any treatment. Properly disinfects equipment as per policy.
Completes medication reconciliations.
May be responsible for scheduling of tests or referrals and communicating to patient.
Maintains safe and therapeutic environment for patient care
Takes necessary safety precautions.
Reports any faulty equipment, infection or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
Uses equipment and supplies in safe, efficient manner. Charge capture methods utilized according to established processes.
Occurrence reports completed as required by policy; may request assistance in completion. Timeliness of completion is to be as soon as possible after the occurrence, but no later than by the end of the shift being worked.
Knows and responds appropriately to all emergency codes. Reports to assigned area during emergency event and carries out assigned functions in timely manner.
Knows and utilizes proper body mechanics.
Reports any Environment of Care hazards/risks to the appropriate personnel.
Assists other personnel in reducing clutter in the work environment - carts, equipment in the hallway.
Applies Safety Guidelines as appropriate for specific patient (age appropriate - pediatric, geriatric, orthopedic, surgical, etc.)
Makes appropriate requests for supplies or equipment needs.
Accountable for ensuring patient safety during the course of performing duties.

Attends minimum of 50% of educational offerings that pertain to assigned areas and applicable. These educational offerings may include at least one hour on fire, safety, and mass disaster, and at least 2 hours on infection control/prevention.
Maintain BLS provider status or equivalent knowledge.
