Program Details Ascend Pilot Academy (APA) is a pilot development program that aims to support aspiring aviators who are just beginning or have not yet started their flight training journey. The program offers a pathway to becoming a pilot with Horizon Air.
APA cadets attend Hillsboro Aero Academy (HAA) for flight training. Also, cadets are responsible for self-funding their private pilot license (PPL) and have the option to complete their PPL training at a flight school of their choice or at HAA. The Ascend Pilot Academy program includes secured loan opportunities for students to obtain their instrument rating, commercial license, multi-engine rating, and certified flight instructor (CFI) once they pass the PPL evaluation for advancement. Horizon Air will provide funds in the amount of $27,000 for students to receive their Commercial Single-Engine License. Additionally, HAA will provide funds for students to become a Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument (CFII).
If accepted into the program and the cadet passes the PPL evaluation, the individual signs an agreement to work for Horizon Air for a minimum of 3 years after meeting their ATP minimums. Once employment at Horizon Air begins, the opportunity to apply to the Pathways program to be a First Officer at Alaska Airlines is also available.
Key Duties
Upon acceptance of the APA, students agree to:
+ Continue to obtain remaining license/ratings at HAA
+ Maintain in good standing with HAA
+ Maintain regular and consistent communication with Horizon Air on curriculum progress
+ Attend program specific meetings, as scheduled
+ Commit to work for Horizon Air for 3 years post program completion and sign an agreement confirming this requirement

Job Responsibilities

If assigned to a CWN contract, the pilot will receive a guaranteed number of workdays equivalent to an EU contract.
The pilot will cover the fire contract on a 12 on / 12 off or a 12 on / 2 off schedule.

All travel and accommodations are covered by the company. The pilot will receive per diem for meals and incidentals.

The Position
Hillsboro Aviation's contract & charter division provides services to the United States Forest Service (USFS), the Department of Interior (DOI), FEMA, large national utility (powerline & infrastructure), and high-tech companies as well as smaller companies and individuals. As a B205A-1++ Fire Fighting and Utility Pilot, you will work closely with the Contract & Charter: R/W team to organize and manage daily requirements of their assigned contract.

Job Responsibilities
Hillsboro Aviation is hiring a B205A-1++ Pilot for either an Exclusive Use (EU) or Call-When-Needed (CWN) contract. The contracts start at the beginning of May or June 2026 and run through the end of the fire season.
If assigned to a CWN contract, the pilot will receive a guaranteed number of workdays equivalent to an EU contract.
The pilot will cover the fire contract on a 12 on / 12 off or a 12 on / 2 off schedule.
For those working a 12 on / 2 off schedule, extended breaks to return home may be arranged periodically, depending on operational demands and relief pilot availability.
All travel and accommodations are covered by the company. The pilot will receive per diem for meals and incidentals.
Additional utility operations may be assigned based on project requirements with schedules adjusted accordingly.
The pilot is responsible for representing both the aircraft and the operation in a professional and courteous manner to the customer, the U.S. Forest Service.
Strong judgment, sound airmanship, and a commitment to safety are essential to operating the aircraft effectively.
Strict adherence to SOPs, contractual obligations, and daily operational reporting procedures is required.

Carry out pre-flight planning (weather, aircraft performance, weight and balance, Notice to Airmen, and flight plans), customs procedures for international flights, perform pre-flight inspections of the aircraft, conduct safety briefings, execute the flight safely and proficiently, conduct a post-flight of the aircraft, and relay any maintenance issues to the Chief Pilot.
Train, study, and know: the federal regulations on relevant flight operations, aircraft systems, normal and emergency operating procedures, aircraft surface contamination and cold weather operations, high altitude operations, crew resource management, and international operations as applicable.
Provide excellent service to passengers, clients, and guests, including greeting the passengers, assisting with their luggage and any other special needs, and briefing passengers on the safety equipment and amenities available on the aircraft.
Carry out other non-flying duties, including travel arrangements for the crew and/or passengers, servicing the aircraft, database updates, aircraft cleaning, and keeping the aircraft, medical and emergency kits, and stores stocked and up to date.
Maintain a current commercial pilot's license or better, second class medical certification or better, and provide all requested documentation before beginning employment to meet FAA, state, and company insurance requirements and regulations and any other applicable codes or requirements for acting as a pilot on Pacific's part. Required:
