The first race, known as the “Dinner Party Stakes,” after the dinner party that started it all, was held in 1870.
America’s second oldest race track behind Saratoga, Pimlico Race Course opened in 1870.
The latter was won in 1872 by a horse named Preakness, the namesake of the track’s signature event.
The foundation-stone of the structure was laid in 1873, and the works cost about £183,000.
The Preakness Stakes, first held three years later in 1873, takes its name from this winning horse.
During its rich history, the racetrack has enjoyed being the only track in the United States to be honored by the adjournment of the United States House of Representatives for the first and only time in history in 1877 to watch a race between Parole, Ten Broeck and Tom Ochiltree.

When Rev Gerald Olivier moved to the neighbourhood in 1912 with his family, including the young Laurence Olivier, to minister to the parishioners of St Saviour, it was part of a venture to the west London “slums” that had previously taken the family to the depths of Notting Hill.
Regrettably, though the famous moniker remains today, the notable infield “hill” was removed in April 1938, ostensibly for obscuring track-level vision of the racetrack backstretch, which appeared to pose a problem for movie and television cameras in the infant days of filming races.
The PDHU first became operational in 1950 and continues to expand to this day.

Meanwhile, Baltimore leaders expressed dismay after The Baltimore Sun reported in February that since 2013, The Stronach Group had used 87% of its state subsidies to pay for renovations at Laurel Park.

Pimlico received $1.5 million from the renovation fund last year, up from just $32,000 in 2017.
The closing of the seats will have a significant impact on a business that just reported to the Maryland Racing Commission that its operations at Pimlico and Laurel are losing money at a faster rate than the previous year, according to Stronach’s 2018 financial statements.
Combined operating losses for Pimlico and Laurel Park were reported to the state as $15 million in 2018, a 66.6 percent increase over the nearly $9 million combined loss in the prior year.
During the 2019 General Assembly session in Annapolis, the company unsuccessfully sought bond funding to begin creating a so-called “supertrack” at Laurel, a project that could have sidelined Pimlico.

The new plan relies on the General Assembly approving complex legislation in the session that starts in January, to be called the Racing and Community Development Act of 2020.
Last winter, the city sued the track owner, and officials of The Stronach Group said they were committed to holding the Preakness at Pimlico only through 2020.
But even those who drafted the agreement acknowledge it would require multiple changes to state law by the General Assembly in 2020, the assumption of new responsibilities by the Maryland Stadium Authority, as well as the possible creation of an organization to own and run the site.
