Pinehurst Resort company history timeline

1895

On December 31, 1895, the Holly Inn, in the newly-named Village of Pinehurst, welcomed its first guests.

But slowly and surely it began to take shape after it was established in 1895.

The resort’s steam power plant opened in 1895.

From its humble beginnings as a pasture in 1895 to one of the premier golf courses in the country, Pinehurst is steeped in history, tradition, and southern hospitality.

1896

It was originally five stories when it was built in 1896.

1897

In October 1897, James Tufts began publishing a weekly resort newspaper, The Pinehurst Outlook, to help develop a sense of community among the resort guests.

Instead, by 1897, he sought healthy sportsmen, well-to-do businessmen and those interested in hitting a little white ball around the first golf course in Pinehurst.

1899

In 1899, Pinehurst's first golf professional, John Dunn Tucker, was hired to add an additional nine holes to create Pinehurst's first 18-hole layout.

1900

1900: English golfer Harry Vardon played an exhibition match on the resort’s original 18-hole course, bolstering Pinehurst’s reputation among a growing number of golf enthusiasts.

1901

The Pinehurst Hotel opened in 1901 and became the center of such activities as riding, hunting, polo, lawn bowling, archery, bicycling, and tennis.

1903

Pinehurst Golf Club opened in 1903 and the resort later hosted popular golfers such as Sam Sneed, Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer.

1907

1907: Donald Ross finished constructing Pinehurst No.

1910

1910: Donald Ross completed Pinehurst No.

1913

Francis Ouimet, winner of the United States Open in 1913 and regarded as the “father of amateur golf.”

1916

It was created in 1916 by James Barber.

1919

1919: Donald Ross finished the work on his final golf course at the resort, Pinehurst No.

1923

1923: Emma Bliss opened The Manor Inn on the grounds of a prior establishment known as the Lexington Hotel.

1926

Her likeness has been portrayed in countless movies in the years following her death in 1926, including Tall Tales & Legends, Buffalo Girls, and Hidalgo.

1928

Climbing aboard a Fokker Trimotor dubbed “Friendship,” Earhart and her copilot, Wilmer Stultz, began the historic trip from an airfield in Newfoundland in June of 1928.

1940

The legendary Ben Hogan started his meteoric ascent into the annals of golfing lore, with his stunning victory at the North and South Open in 1940.

1948

He then tapped Donald Ross as his man to bring golf to the area, a task Ross would make his passion until his passing in 1948.

1960

By the late 1960's the shareholders of Pinehurst, Inc. decided to sell the resort property to Diamondhead Corporation.

1961

5 was designed in 1961 by Ellis Maples, a protégé of Donald Ross and part of North Carolina’s “First Family” of golf course design.

1970

It supplied electricity to the cottages, hotels and trolleys in town beginning on December 31st that year, kicked off with a New Year’s Eve party (as any good kick off should begin). It remained in use until the 1970’s.

1970: After nearly seven decades, the Tufts family sold its ownership stake in the resort to commercial transport magnate, Malcolm McLea.

1975

The building you can visit today was created in 1975.

1980

In 1980, Pinehurst became an incorporated municipality with ownership of the property shifting many times since then.

1984

The English style garden was created in 1984 as a tribute to the attempted 16th century colonization at Roanoke Island. (Roanoke Island is in the Outer Banks, far east of Pinehurst, in North Carolina.)

It reopened nearly a decade later in 1984, after a $4 million renovation.

1989

1989: Golfer Vicki Goetze finished first in the United States Women’s Amateur Open at Pinehurst Resort, with Brandie Burton coming in second.

1990

Both the Carolina Hotel as well as The Holly Inn were then joined by The Manor Inn many years later in 1990.

1994

1994: Pinehurst Resort played host to the United States Senior Open, in which South African-native Simon Hobday won the event.

1995

1995: The resort celebrated its centennial anniversary with an array of activities.

1996

In 1996, Pinehurst Resort became formally known as a National Landmark status for their achievements in golf history.

1999

2 saw the legendary duel between Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson during the closing round of the 1999 United States Open.

2000

In 2000, Golf Digest listed Pinehurst as Number 3 on its list of the world’s “50 Greatest Golf Destinations.” The United States Open Championship were held on the fabled Pinehurst No.

Goetze went on to win the LGPA’s Corning Classic in 2000.

2001

2001: Pinehurst celebrates 50th Anniversary of the North & South Senior Men’s Championship and past winners.

2002

In 2002, the new Spa at Pinehurst was one of the first spas in the South to receive the Mobil Four-Star spa designation.

2005

2005: US Open Championship returned to Pinehurst from June 16 - 19, 2005.

2007

2007: Pinehurst celebrated 100 years of championship golf with the Centennial Celebration of Pinehurst No.

2008

2008: Pinehurst Resort became a member of Historic Hotels of America in recognition of its outstanding connection of the history of golf in the United States.

2014

In 2014, history was made when, for the first time ever, the Women’s Open and the Men’s Open was held on the same golf course, Pinehurst No.

Turkel was designated as the “2014 Historian of the Year by Historic Hotels of America,” the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

2016

Bell was even elected into World Golf Hall of Fame shortly following her death in 2016.

2018

The building was restored and repurposed by Pinehurst Resort in 2018, as Pinehurst Brewing Co.

2019

Continued course renovations, the hosting of the 2019 United States Senior Women’s Open (Pine Needles), and a new Craft Brew Pub and Brewery in the original Pinehurst power plant are on the horizon.
