In 1856, he hired the first female detective, a young widow named Kate Warne.

In 1861, while investigating a railway case, Pinkerton uncovered an apparent assassination plot against Abraham Lincoln.

Pinkerton grew to respect the young lady so much that, when she died in 1868, he buried her in his family plot.

Allan Pinkerton died in 1884, and his sons William and Robert succeeded him as co-principals of the agency; William directed operations in the West from his office in Chicago, while Robert maintained an office in New York and supervised the eastern operations.

The contract between the union and Carnegie Steel was set to expire on July 1, 1892, and Carnegie, who was in Scotland at the time, gave his operations manager, Frick, carte blanche to break the union ahead of this deadline.

By 1940, the character of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency had changed significantly.
