Pinnacle sports company history timeline

1998

PinnacleSports.com is an online sportsbook founded in 1998 and counted on by the largest and most successful bettors in the world.

In 1998, a law was passed: betting sites operating from Margarita Island now had to be associated with a hotel with at least 300 rooms.

Davis appeared in a Times article in 1998 under the headline: “With Technology, Island Bookies Skirt United States Law.” Customers in the United States could place their bets with Antiguan operators or on a relatively primitive website.

2000

Pinnacle’s first fully operational online sportsbook (initially launching as planetpinnacle.com) went live in 2000.

Throughout the mid-2000’s, Pinnacle continued to grow and establish its reputation as a trusted online bookmaker that offered something no one else could.

The new name, domain (pinnacle.com) and dynamic design style was intended to complement the breadth of services that were developed and rolled out through the mid-2000’s (sports betting, casino, esports, mobile, affiliates and a B2B offering).

2001

The company’s current headquarters, still based in Curaçao, was opened just after the turn of the century in 2001.

2003

Of course, the web address pinnaclesports.com was already registered, so initially they used the URL planetpinnacle.com before moving to their current address in May of 2003.

The ideas Pinnacle Sports had in 2003 at the time sounded ludicrous, and surely they’d be famous last words of a bookmaker soon to go bust.

2006

That question is playing out in the rising controversy over betting on daily fantasy sports — the now-ubiquitous business that was given life by a 2006 federal law that tried, and largely failed, to stamp out old-school sports betting.

Davis’s $2.5 billion gambling ring in Antigua, signaling a more aggressive posture toward offshore sports books, Congress passed the 2006 Internet gambling law, barring the use of credit cards to place online bets.

2007

After stopping the acceptance of US players right after UIGEA (2007), they began to focus most of their marketing on football (soccer) while still remaining an expert on US sports.

In a statement, Pinnacle said it “pulled out of the United States in 2007,” after the passage of the federal online gambling law, and since then had “never knowingly taken bets from the United States.” The company says it is fully licensed in Curaçao, where online gambling is legal.

However, American and European investigators have determined that since 2007, Pinnacle has had thousands of betting customers in the United States, documents show.

Jimmy finally fulfilled Jeff’s dream in late 2007 when the first cycling shoes were introduced to the public.

2008

Pinnacle responded by trying to look beyond the United States market, and by 2008 its annual intake had dropped to $5.7 billion from $12 billion, according to documents filed with regulators on the English Channel island of Alderney, where Pinnacle had sought a gambling license.

Simon moved from the UK to the US in 2008 when he starting working on video games, culminating in 7 years working on Neverwinter Online in California.

2009

In 2009, Kristian created the Savage Bloggers Network (SBN), an aggregated RSS feed of Savage Worlds blogs written by fans in the community.

2010

Pinnacle reached another major landmark in its history in January of 2010 when they became the first bookmaker to take an eSports bet.

2012

But CDNetworks promoted its “point of presence” in the Chelsea data center in a 2012 news release.

2014

What is clear, though, is that by 2014, vast amounts of gambling data, once housed legally offshore, were being delivered to the United States from equipment in New York, Miami, Chicago, Dallas and elsewhere.

And by 2014, Pinnacle began delivering content widely through CDNetworks in New York and elsewhere in the country.

While very few could contest Pinnacle’s claims that they offered the highest betting limits online, any doubts were well and truly quashed during the 2014 World Cup.

2016

The recent growth of the eSports betting industry and quality of the eSports betting experience Pinnacle provided its customers was highlighted in 2016 when the bookmaker won the first of many eSports awards.

2017

Pinnacle then re-launched its eSports hub later in 2017, giving bettors everything they need in one place - this includes their industry-leading odds, a comprehensive event schedule and a blog full of educational content.

In 2017, Pinnacle also released two major updates to its website.

2018

Pinnacle announced another first for the organisation just 10 days into 2018 when they announced their first ever brand ambassador Mats Wilander.

2019

She joined the Pinnacle family in August of 2019.
