POSITION: Under direction, maintains inventory of linen, clothing, and supplies; operates detainees' property room; accepts delivery of and transports supplies; provides various services to the different bureaus of the Sheriff's Office, including but not limited to any of the Sheriff's Custody facilities, or to detention facilities operated by the Probation Department; performs and/or supervises inmates or detainees performing minor housekeeping tasks and repairs; performs related duties as required. Examples of Duties * Orders and issues linen and clothing and coordinates laundry services; orders supplies, accepts deliveries, and checks supplies received against invoices; distributes goods received, arranges supplies on shelves, and maintains inventory records; maintains security of items stored in the supply room; stores and keeps records of detainees' or inmates' clothing and bulk property. * Supervises inmates or detainees in various work assignments; performs or supervises inmates or detainees performing minor housekeeping tasks such as painting, general cleaning making simple repairs, and performing light building or grounds maintenance; operates yard equipment for grounds maintenance; assists with submission and follow-up of maintenance requests. * Lifts, moves, and transports heavy and bulky items. Writes simple reports and memoranda regarding lost property and inmate/detainee disciplinary problems. * Uses a computer to enter data for record of inmate property, order and inventory supplies, and linens. * Issues and delivers office supplies and equipment; oversees or provides mail handling and courier services as needed. * Transports vehicles to the County garage, and to other locations within the County; monitors inventory and condition of safety equipment and oversees equipment maintenance; arranges vehicle maintenance and repairs through County garage, and maintains service records of vehicles; assists employees in obtaining vehicles and transportation. * Assists the public in person or on the phone. * May assist food service workers as needed and, * Performs other related duties as required. Employment Standards 1. A combination of training, education, and/or experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Knowledge of: English grammar and usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports; basic math to place supply orders and maintain inventory. Ability to: understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work independently without close supervision; keep accurate records; use a computer to complete daily tasks; perform minor building maintenance tasks and learn to make minor repairs; communicate effectively with current and former inmates/juveniles in detention and with members of the public; work well with co-workers, inmates and or juveniles and the public; maintain appropriate relationships with inmates or juveniles in custody; safely maintain the security of assigned inmates or juveniles in custody; learn to operate fork lift based on assignment. Additional Requirements: Must be physically able to lift heavy items up to 50 pounds above and below shoulder height, perform continuous standing walking, reaching, and bending. Incumbents may be exposed to a variety of hazardous materials, including exposure to chemicals, fumes, and toxic substances. Work in some positions may require various types of physical exertion, such as: bending, stooping and lifting; carrying and moving heavy objects such as linens, supplies or inmate property over uneven surfaces, such as up or down staircases and narrow hallways; environment may be subject to loud noises and varying temperatures; possession of a valid California Class C driver's license at the time of appointment; appointee must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period. Supplemental Information SELECTION PROCESS: 1. Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards. 2. Review of Personal History Questionnaire: Qualified candidates will be emailed a notice to complete a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). Failure to submit a PHQ by the deadline will result in disqualification from the selection process. Candidates who successfully pass the PHQ, will advance and be invited to the next step in the selection process. 3. Computerized Skill Assessment: Candidates will be notified by email with instructions on obtaining and taking the assessment. Candidate must pass the online assessment for placement on the employment list. Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Computerized Skill Assessment to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list. NOTE: Veteran's preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans' hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability.
